C29 loudness control

I just picked up a beautiful C29 for a great price. I currently have a C712 and have had a C30 in the not so distant past. On the C712 and C30 the loudness control was essentially the same - as you turned the loudness control the volume remained constant while the level of loudness compensation increased. On the C29 it appears to be a little different. As the loudness control is turned, the volume decreases while the loudness compensation increases. This is very similar to the style employed on vintage Yamaha receivers and amps where you set the loudness to flat, adjust the volume to the max expected level you would listen to, and then use the loudness control to adjust volume and apply compensation simultaneously. My question is whether or not this is normal for the C29. It seems odd that the C29 would differ in this regard from the other McIntosh preamps that I have owned.

The C26 does the same thing. Somewhere there's a graph of the C26 Loudness circuit frequency response on the webspace. Have a look at www.berners.ch and see if he has any C29 manuals available in PDF format. Also check AK manuals section.

Thanks guys - I totally forgot that we have the manuals for many of these components in the database.

Here's what the manual says, which is consistent with what I'm experiencing:

"Turning the control clockwise toward MAX reduces the listening volume, and automatically increases the compensation by boosting bass."
