C33 with Carys?

robobxman

Roll me away tonight...
This is my first post here in the Mc forum, so hello!

In 23 days I get my Cary V12 tube monoblocks (not that I'm counting). I'm giving some serious thought to mating them with a Mc C33 preamp as one is for sale locally.

Now I'm sure this is the right place for some encouragement - perhaps I'm subconsciously looking for a push? - but in all seriousness I was hoping to hear if anyone has mated this or a similar Mc SS preamp w/ Cary tube amps, and what you thought or think.

What I like about the C33:
- Many inputs
- Two phono inputs
- I like buying gear that maintains its value
- Cool look
- Seems to be a well regarded model

(and what is a compander/expander? ... just curious)

Thanks!

A lot depends on the sound you are looking for. The C33 is a very smooth and warm preamp. I have a C34V (which, I am told, is VERY similar to the C33 with some changes for video inputs) and I love the way it sounds, but it's a very different pre-amp from the "modern" McIntosh pre-amps in terms of detail and speed. On the positive side, its sonic characteristics make it very forgiving and great for playing poor recordings (especially with its various tone controls).

If you love warm, smooth sound, you'd be very happy. If you are looking for more detail, speed and frequency extension (i.e. a more "modern" sound) I believe you would be disappointed.

Those V12s are special. I had it in my system before I upgraded to 805ea. You made a very wise choice. It should play well with the C33. If you can, may I recommend a C41, 42, 45 or 46.
