calling all ADS guys... need guidance on my 1090 refers project.

I think I need to pull the crossovers ASAP and see how many caps COULD be replaced. (I'm not of a mind to upgrade the films.) If it's just a couple, maybe try to source the work locally. I'm not a horrible solderer, so it's not impossible I could do it myself, if I can get the right replacements. It would be a first, but would be nice to get some familiarity with the process. Probably, save me a bundle over time if I can work up to receivers etc. If that's a route on that, I could spring for the Richard dome referbs. Add into this mix, the fact I haven't stated, but many of you well know about... my wife will F'ing kill me if she figures out I'm putting money into more gear. She does not share my enthusiasm.
 
I got one of these cheap soldering stations over at Parts Express along with a good chisel tip. I used to think I was a crappy solderer as well until trying a chisel tip, which distributes more heat to your parts to be soldered. It made all of the difference in the world. The caps (check your value) themselves are negligible, so it shouldn't create a big enough dent in the piggy bank to incur the ire of Mrs. Seaneman.

Right. On. I have that same soldering rig... maybe I need to order some tips and experiment. I've never used a chisel tip.
 
Richards value starts with the driver restoration work he can do. As a few others have hinted at, the only thing on the crossovers to deal with at this point may be the electrolytics. Those are easy to replace. At that time you can simply examine all the solders etc to make sure things seem okay otherwise.

Like Soundmotor said, pull the little rubber receivers off the pegs and re-install them back into the holes with a shot of glue.
Pick off the annoying large debris off the domes and enjoy. Then if you think they sound blah at that point, send the tweets and mids down to Richard. Even the cabinet work can wait if you want.
 
Congrats on speakers. That $600 may seam like a lot of money. Until comparing what you can get new for that. My wife too, does not share view of value.
