Calling Chess Players

Rome

Holsum Honey Buns
Do you have any funny, odd, or great stories about playing Chess?

My neighbor back in the 80's was a hippie white dude personified. Don't get me wrong, I loved him like a brother & we shared many good times together. My ex-wife had to give him medical treatment one night. After taking twelve (ludes) during the course of the day, he decided to dive into the apartment pool. :sigh:

Anyway, this same guy was a good Chess player & he would take away his queen & other pieces at times & beat me like I stole something. Being a proud Black man, I could not have that stuff, so I kept at it. Finally, I was able to hold my own & ultimately beating him.

Now, I have my son interested in this great game. I have always beaten him, but just the other week, he slipped one by me. There is not a day he let's me forget it. I am honing my Ninja skills so that when we meet again, I WILL be ready.

Hope to see some nice stories.

I learned to play chess in 6th grade from the Headmaster of my school. After playing half a dozen times I beat him. He wouldn't play me anymore after that.

Shortly after graduating from high school my first job was working at a small fibreglass laminating business. The owner loved playing chess but he always wanted to play until he won a game. He would keep setting up the board after each game he lost saying "one more game", until I'd get tired of playing and gracefully lose. Then he'd be happy.

I love the game but I don't play competitively. My chess set and board:

Hi Mark B,

You have one great looking set there. Yea, my friend did me the same way, in that, after I beat him, he did not want to play as much anymore. Funny how that works!

My son is getting antsy now, he wants a rematch to see if he can beat me again.

I have three sets, one my boss gave me back in 85. After a few moves & a fire it still looks great. It is white marble. I also have a wood set & glass set that my son gave me for my 50th birthday. I won't open that one. It is dear to my heart.

Maybe I wil post a pic of my marble set. I don't play tournament chess either, but I bet it is fun.

I taught my daughter when she was 4 or 5 how to play chess. She loved to play. It's a great game for developing mental skills and strategy. I can't remember when she finally beat me but I do remember how proud and accomplished she felt.

When I was in college, we replaced the back row with filled shot glasses. That was fun! :D

Hi Onepixel,

Great effect on your avatar!

Indeed, it is a great game for the mind. It will your develop patience & teach critical thinking. Your daughter will always treasure those moments with you. I bet she has bragged about beating you a few times. :D

Those college days will haunt us forever! :D

Yup, that's for sure and for me as well. Great times! She'll be going to college next year and we haven't played in years. I'm gonna have to dust off the old board for a game or two.

Cheers

We always play chess at work during our lunch break....11:30am to Noon.
Sometimes, we go "over" a few minutes.
It's never been a problem....until we got a new supervisor.
He waited until 12:01pm.....walked over to us.....grabbed BOTH kings.....and said one word.....CHECKMATE!!

Hi Gearhound,

I have had a few of those bosses in my life. It seems like he is jealous.
Well, maybe you & your co-workers can set up a time to play after work.

Chess involves your total concentration, so you don't need him around to push your pieces over like a kid.

When I was a freshman at Emory and Henry College, quite some time ago, I used to play chess quite a bit with a fellow named Hans. He moved away during our freshman year and we cooked up a scheme to keep playing via long distance.

We gave every piece on the board a first name and every square a last name. Then we would make long-distance, operated assisted, person to person calls to say "Tim Wyatt" or "Earl James." This method allowed us to communicate our moves without incurring any long-distance charges.

We actually only completed one game using this method as it took longer than we thought to finish.

Ingenious method of use Strangeband,

I know you will always have fond memories of that & it was in those days all about saving the pennies!

When my parents were alive & I returned home from visiting them, I would call & ask for myself. That saved some money on LD & it let them know I arrived home safely.

Nice sentiment,

Some years back,I rented a room in an old victorian
boarding house that had a beautiful front parlor
with a fireplace and a modest vintage sound system
with wall to wall books as a guest library.
On a table by the bay windows was a chess board
with the pieces all set up waiting for play.
I would sit at night sometimes with the owner of the home
with a fire lit,A bottle of port wine and some jazz spinning
playing chess till the wee hours in the morning.
I never beat him any of the games we played
but I thoroughly enjoyed spending an evening that way!
I moved on and sometime later the man died
and I have not played a game since~
Thanks for reminding me of the memory,Im due for a game.

I learned the game from my Dad many years ago.
Played off and on throughout the years. I had a computer program that I would play on the laptop when I traveled a few years back.
Played my 14 year old nephew last year at X-mas. First game I killed him, second game was tighter, but I ended up pulling it out with just a rook, bishop and knight. THink I'll pull out that old computer program and put it on this laptop....

Hi Sluggo,

Your sentiment has certainly placed me in a pensive mood.
Sorry to hear about the departed the man, but you will always have the memories. Find a way to play a game out of repsect for him.

Nice sentiment indeed,

Hi Sandy,

Don't put yourself down like that! You just need to put your whole mental prowess to use. I bet you will come away with a win.

Hi Spiderhead69,

Your sentiment really hits home. Reminds me back when I started to learn.
I had some tenactity that could not be denied. Sounds like the last battle was a great one with those pieces involved.

Yea, pull out that old PC game & get to it. I have a Chess program on my PC that is very good. If anyone is interested in a free Chess PC program, see if you can TestedOk's Software 1.0 version (2000). It will really test your skill & has some nice features as well.

Nice sentiment,
Rome

I'm a fourth generation chess player. My great grandfather (a cabinet maker) carved the set I still use. He taught my grandfather, who taught my dad, who taught me and my brother. My brother and I play whenever we get together and we're about 50/50 in wins.

Ahhhhh Bogframe,

What a great sentiment you have there with your Great grandfather making the set you still use. Chess is so misunderstood & I wish more families got involved in playing this game. Not only is it fun. It also, IMO brings out the competitive spirit in us.

I bet your brother will up that win count if we asked him about it! :D
Glad you shared this nice story.
