Cambridge Audio CD4 - to DAC or not to DAC

That is my question....

Is there any point in me buying a seperate DAC to improve the audio output of the above CD player?

If so, which one? I am on a definite low budget, and have been reading good things about the Beresford DA 7510 mk 3. Anyone had experience of them?

Any opinions appreciated.

With no replies, I'll try to help. I am unfamiliar with the Beresford, but if it is a really cheap unit, you may not realize an improvement over your CA CD-4. I would take a look at this site for some ideas: www.pacificvalve.us. Also, keep an eye on ebay (especially a seller called mhdtlabs - who sells handmade inexpensive DACs from Asia which are widely priased) and Audiogon for inexpensive used DACs. Personally, I would stick to newer designs, which have improved in the entry-level price points a lot in recent years. Don't forget to budget for a decent digital interconnect cable, too.

Thanks for the advice - I kind of chose to stick with the current CD4 for now, and concentrate on making the amplifier as good as I can. Truth be known, am really enjoying rolling valves around!!:music:

Will get around to replacing the entire CD unit at some point - but not just yet...
