I asked a value question on the G22K Pre amp. Not sure I'm keeping it yet. I was trying to remember if it worked as a stand alone preamp. I did remember a past discussions about the flashing protection light and whether or not it actually works as a regular Preamp. This Preamp was a spare for my G22 & G33. I believe @LBPete was involved somehow, My unit is on the dim bulb now so I can't test till tomorrow. Thanks. Rick

UPDATE. It works great as a Pre Amp. Blinking Protection LED problem solved. Simply follow the wires I marked 123 on F-2897 LED board down to a 3 pin connector. Disconnect and the blinking LED will stop.

It can be used with an outboard amp, but the protection light will always blink red unless one bypasses it. There is also the matter of driving the power meters, I assume the preamp picks the signal for those off the umbilical coming from the power amp section, so that would be another challenge to overcome.
 
@Sansuiman. I was aware the power meters would be disabled. Part of me wants to keep it. It has such a Sansui prevention. Thanks for your time.
 
It's a fantastic tuner, well worth using as a stand alone. It will work as a tuner with any amp but as @Sansuiman noted, the protection LED will flash continuously and the meters won't register. They both need to be connected to the amp through the umbilical cord.

Thanks @LBPete. I'm still undecided on keeping it right now. Anyone familiar with a fix for the blinking protection light?
 
I'm not aware of a "Fix" for the blinking protection LED. It can certainly be disconnected and I took a quick look at the schematic and quickly realized that simply tracing the circuit is well beyond a "quick" look. Having the unit open would make tracing the circuit easier. I need to do some therapy to mine and when I'm in there I'll find a point to disconnect it.

Electrical tape comes in colors other than black. It would just take a very small piece. You would have to take the faceplate off to access the LED.

I haven't looked at a schematic, but it should be quite easy (probably pulling/cutting one wire) to disable the protection LED. No need to tape over it, or other such halfassery. And the connection broken to prevent it from blinking all the time could always be restored later, if a mating amp section is found to go with it.
 
@LBPete, agreed. If I had the unit on my bench, I'd just pop it open and trace the wiring until I found a convenient place to disable the protection LED. That'd be the easy mod. Getting the meters working is another matter entirely. I don't even know if the meter drive circuit is within the pre/tuner section on these, or if it's in the power amp section, and sent over the umbilical.

If the former, then it seems like it wouldn't be that difficult to find a way to drive the meters, just need a signal at appropriate level to get them to read. If the latter, one would have to create a meter driver circuit to install inside the pre/tuner section.

Yes, but more specifically, is the circuit that acts as the interposer between the output signal and the meters extant in the tuner/pre part of the unit, or was it in the power amp section? I ask because if that circuit is physically located in the power amp, then it would have to be replicated before the output signal is fed into the meters, which themselves typically operate on millivolt level signals scaled down from higher levels.
 
It may be possible. I need to dig into the power meter driver card in my G33. The meters slam full scale when it's turned off. I need to replace the "green bug" relay on that card. I want to bring it to the SO Cal Audio fest in October.

UPDATE on main post with pics. It works great as a Pre Amp. Blinking Protection LED problem solved. Simply follow the wires I marked 123 on F-2897 LED board down to a 3 pin connector. Disconnect and the blinking LED will stop. Now I am battling channel drop on the Connect/disconnect switch. I cleaned it a couple timed and cycled like a mad man. Fingers crossed.
