Can an Apt Holman Preamp drive DT990's?

Hey all,

I have a Thorens Jubilee Gold TT (TD 147 w/auto stop) with an Apt Holman Preamp but never used headphones with them.

Ebay has BeyerDynamic DT990 600 Ohm Over-Ear Headphones - Chrome Special Edition 483966BC for $139.99 which seems like a steal.

Can an Apt Holman Preamp drive DT990's?

This is the description from the Apt Holman manual:

I am not spec savvy enough to do the math.

Any thoughts on this preamp with phones would be helpful.

If the DT990's are too "bright" for the Apt Holman, which headphones might be best for this set up? I am flexible with budget.

Perhaps Sennheiser HD 650's at 300ohms might be better for this setup?

I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be able to push headphones. I have the apt Holman Amp One and it sounds gorgeous. I don't have the pre-amp but I'm always on the lookout for one.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD600 cans that are 300 ohm. All of my stereo gear drives them just fine, including a Yamaha C-4 pre and a couple of DACs, a Music Hall dac25.2 and a Grant Fidelity Tube DAC-09. All 3 pieces have an internal headphone amp. I also have a Yamaha RX-V800 AVR and it cannot drive the 300 ohm Sennheisers.
Your best bet would be to buy something you can send back if your gear cannot drive them.

The Apt Holman Pre-amplifier has an independent circuit for the headphone which makes it a step ahead of most receivers from those day. The headphone amp driver is a dual op-amp IC RC4558CP with a small signal transistor as source follower for each channel. The 4558 is a dual version of the infamous 741 which is less than ideal for audio circuit. You will be short changing the potential of the BeyerDynamic DT990 600 Ohm using the Apt Holman headphone jack.

An AC powered headamp is desirable for any quality headphone such as the BeyerDynamic DT990 600 Ohm.
