can anyone assist me in identifying these speakers?

Hello, I picked up a pair of tower speakers today at the local thrift store and wondered if any of you might help me in identifying them. They have Polydax tweeters and as you can see a oval main driver. They are covered with a sock, much like the Boston VR series. I know both Toby and EMI had manufactured speakers with 6X9 drivers. Thanks in advance. -Todd

Whoa, bizarre. Any better pics? Any possibility they could be DIY (can't really see the construction with the pic you posted)?

Thank you for the reply. Yes, its a definite possibility that they are DIY. Thedrivers cut outs are all CNC and the sock looks professionally done. Construction is heavy MDF, but the rounded corners look to be made from African walnut. Ill try to post more pics later today.
 
Hmm, there are some speaker manufacturers who liked oval woofers. I would use the search box at the upper right of your screen and type "oval woofer" in quotes and check out some AK threads. You might find something. You can do the same on Google Images - 'oval woofer', 'tower speaker oval woofer' etc.

I think EMI made some oval woofer speakers, and KEF. Once you find some brands in search results, you can search on them specifically.

I appreciate the suggestions. I've been scouring google images off an on today with no luck and unfortunately when one types in "tower" and any type of speaker it populates with wakeboard tower speakers, ah the Internet. I will keep looking through the archives here to see if I cannot find something, but after looking through the EPIs and Toby, I'm beginning to think that Swechsler above was right in thinking they might be a DYI kit or otherwise.

Can you post close up pics of the drivers, and the binding posts? Also may help to pull the drivers, see what they are as well as the crossovers.
 
KEF didn't make any oval woofers AFAIK; they did have a fairly well-known racetrack style woofer that was used in their speakers and those of some other manufacturers. EMI is a possibility but these look more contemporary than most EMI woofer pics I found online.

Most (but not all) oval woofers were designed for automotive use. If these are DIY, there's a decent possibility that's what those are.

Not to me, other than that they're a narrow cloth-covered tower. The tweeters are wrong, and I've never seen any Definitive speaker with oval woofers (or any Definitive towers with ports, although I may be wrong on that second point).
 
First, welcome to AK.
It is always easier to help someone when they have their location listed in their profile. For instance, we don't know if you're shopping in the EU or the USA. Help us out there.

To me, they definitely look like DIY. The woofer position is about opposed to any transmission line effect from the tower and the port could have been a single instead of two. About the most reliable diagnosis of the speakers will be an owner's impression while playing them. Since that oval woofer looks real close to auto speakers, I'd suggest to put a meter on the binding posts and see what the system resistance is. Most auto speakers are 4 ohm and that might challenge a few receivers or amplifiers.

Actually, I'm not aware of any Polk home speakers with oval woofers either (but I've never been a Polk owner except for a pair of 2-way 6x9s that I used to have in an old Acura).
 
Not sure what those speakers are.

However....... what's up with those Seeburgs? That stand footprint is so small that it looks like a light breeze could cause those to topple over ......
 
Whether there are any labels on the back may shed some light. DIY would not have any.

Good point on the woofer DC resistance. Assuming it's a conventional crossover, checking it at the input posts will essentially be checking on the woofer.

If those are car audio woofers, it should be obvious by looking at their backsides. Those always have labels.
 
Thank each of you for your thoughts and insight. I've been out of town for a week, but I'll try to get some better pictures posted soon. I've also update my profile to include my location: Ogden, UT. I'll also see what information I can glean from the exterior, interior, drivers, etc.

The Seeburgs were just on the stands to take ad pictures, but your point is well taken.
