Can anyone date this RCA Victor Record?

S in the catalog number indicates stereo. If it had an M (like LPM-1254, an Elvis LP), it would be mono. The Goldmine price guides are more useful for information like this than for street prices.

This is an original press of the lp from Germany. The German lps in the 50s and 60s typically copied the US jacket, which is what this did. ABC/Dunhill did not exist overseas, so the disc was licensed by RCA in Germany, hence the blocked in logo and German company serial number, which has nothing to do with LSD, like the Mamas and Papas, but is funny. As to it being intentional, sure - it is a German RCA serial number that they inntionally gave it for their catalog. Nothing on this lp is a nod to the counter-culture or drugs, but a standard German press from that period. German pressings of US acts from this period are actually not uncommon as a very large number were sold to US, UK and Canadian servicemen who were stationed over there, and subsequently brought back here. This particular lp is fun, but not especially valuable. The original US toilet jacket still has some collector appeal, but demand has faded substantially.

Thanks for the info on the German RCA release. I agree it unlikely that the LSD serial number is any reference to drugs / counter-culture. Not sure what you're saying about the Mammas and Pappas though - they certainly were dipping their toes into the LSD in the mid-sixties, I think I read that Mamma Cass introduced Graham Nash to LSD, and that's why I thought the serial number was funny.

>> In interviews, former band members confided that their recording sessions (and lifestyles) were usually heavily substance-laden, with large reserves of marijuana and popular 1960s drugs on hand.

Hi,

LSD= German designation for Living Stereo Dunhill US series! Licensed from Dunhill Records, USA. Superior pressings to the US Dunhill pressings. In the UK Dunhill was on EMI-Stateside records.
