I live in Somerset. As I mentioned in a previous post I'm looking for someone who can work on some gear that I have. I'm in Somerset, MA. I'm definitely not a rich man so a reasonable rate is key. I have two nice pieces just sitting around gathering dust. One is a Marantz 2240 quad receiver and the other is a Teac Integrated Amplifier.

Help! No tunes makes Dave a grumpy dude.

Hi,
I haven't found anyone in MA or RI who is capable or willing to work on my vintage Marantz components. However, I have used ES Labs in Wethersfield CT for my Nakamichi tape decks and they have performed minor service on the vintage Marantz components but for the serious work I have brought them to the Soundsmith in Peekskill NY with very good success. Both are not inexpensive but if you want them done right, I can recommend both without hesitation. Soundsmith does offer a one year parts and labor warranty which very few will match.

There is a guy named Dave in Marshfield that came strongly recommended by Delihaus (hi Paul!). I've used him for a few items that were screwed up by a 'reputable' shop, his repairs were excellent and the prices were more than reasonable. I have a few pieces of gear with him now.

I can recommend Chris Ready at Ready Audio in Pa. (610-485-1137) for his craftsmanship, more than fair pricing and quick turn around time......Their are many past testaments to his quality work......I talked with him this week about sending parts off one of my receivers and he is presently restoring a quad.....

Hands down, I would recommend George Volpi at the Audio Lab in Cambridge, MA. He beautifully restored my pioneer sa-7100 back to perfect working condition! He charges $35 up front to diagnose the problem, but once he figures out what it is and what parts will cost, he quotes you a price and puts that $35 toward the repair (if you decide you want to go forward with the repair)!
 
I DON'T recommend Audio Video Plus in Arlington...

Vince at Audio Pros in Watertown did a good job repairing an Otari MX5050 1/2" eight-track for me, but he's something of a character and likes to chat a lot.

Vince ripped me off to the tune of $400 on two different pieces of equipment, and failed to fix either one in the process. Incompetent, immoral, and an a-hole. Great combination of attributes.

The piece of equipment that he insisted needed to be 'redesigned' (at some unknown cost above and beyond the $200 I'd already spent to have him fix it) was found to have a single bad capacitor by the aforementioned Dave in Marshfield.

I would avoid this guy, and shop, like the plague.

Haha.. I dropped by there when I lived in boston. That guy is awesome. He recommended a Velokovsky book "World's in Collision". I still need to read it.
 
I bought some Teac heads from Vince. Great price, and he gave me some tips on calibrating the deck.
 
Dont really need to add anything but Dave ("grateful") will likely be your man. He's done some work on my Pioneer, and a Sansui, Kenwood tuner so he knows vintage gear. Not a bad ride out to Marshfield.......
