Can Dynaco ST-70 power ADS L710s?

I'm currently shopping for my first nice receiver/amplifier and want to match it with a pair of ADS L710 speakers (89db, 4ohm) for phono, cassette, and tuner functions (not too interested in running anything else through them).

A number of people have recommended a Dynaco ST-70 and I've found nice options for ones that have been completely restored. A few people though have told me that these units don't have enough power and that I need a solid state amplifier for the L710s.

I was hoping people with more experience might give me some advice on whether I'd be fine with a Dynaco ST-70 (paired with a PAS-3 most likely), or if I need something with more power (e.g. I found a nice Music Fidelity A1008 in my price range too).

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Shouldn’t be a problem if the room isn’t too big, and you don’t go super loud. They’ll likely sound nice together. I run all sorts of odd speakers with my Sherwood S-5000 (AR98LS for example) and the sound good and are plenty loud.

Since the ST70 is of similar power and the ADS brining similarly efficient, I figure you will have similar results with to me.

I tried some L710’s with my Marantz 8b for a while (similar power to an ST-70) and it was OK but not great. The 710’s just seemed happier with more power (like my SS MC2105).

I have a pair of ADS L570/2's that sound good with my ST-70. My living room is about 20' x 16'. Speakers around 89db sound fine with my ST-70, not super loud, but the amp will push them a lot louder Than I usually listen anyway.

I've run 89 dB, 8 ohm Phillips speakers (can't recall the model, sorry) and had some mixed results. At low and moderate volumes they were just great. When I pushed them hard at very loud levels, measured with a sound meter at about 85 dBa (I was curious) they start to run out of power and you can hear the sound change, starts to get somewhat less sweet, kind of harder around the edges. I'm not describing this well, but I suspect I was touching the edge of clipping at that point.

BTW, at 85 dBa, sound is loud enough so that you need to should to speak to someone standing right next to you. So if you normally listen at volumes where you can still carry on a conversation, you will be fine with the Stereo 70

Run a set of Infinity RSMs rated at 86db 4 ohm, 20 watts min, my ST 70 will push these into the 90s db range and maybe higher but haven’t had the need….

My ST70 has original iron but all the high end Tubes4hifi parts, octal board and such….

You’d not have any problem driving the L710s

If you want more power take a look at a VTA ST-120.

Should also have mentioned that I’ve run this combo with a few different PAS 2/3 preamps and it sounds great, also switch in an old Denon PRA 1200 for MC carts and it also is a good combo.

Even though my first recommendation was an ST 70, if you have enough skills to update a tube amp I’d change my recommendation to a Fisher SA100, in my opinion the Fisher sounds better.

My hesitation in recommending the Fisher is that your unlikely to find one that has been updated, but original versions can be had within your budget constraints and the update parts are less than $200…

With all that said you’ll be very happy with a good ST70….

I have run my ST-70 with Braun 710's and my Ampex pre and they sound lovely together.

Really have not found any speakers that don't sound good with the ST-70. As long as the speaker's are more on the efficient side you should get plenty of volume.

When I got a pair of ADS 710's a year or so ago, I initially powered them with a VTA-70 but they sounded much better when I switched to a Bryston 4Bst. Used a BP20 for preamp. These speakers were in our conference room which is fairly good sized, guess around 400 sft+. All said gear is in great condition.

Similar situation with a pair of ADS 1230 that I bought later for a larger 600+ sft great room with open floor plan. Started with a Sherwood S5000, then an fully rebuilt SA-9100 but later switched to a 150 wpc Ice Class D amp. Will be replacing that with a Parasound 2125 soon that I recently bought.

Despite their sensitivity ratings, the ADS do sound a lot better with more power. Also I am 100% hard rock/blues listener.
