Can I Restore the Finish on my DB Plus 440's?

I just picked up a pair of DB Plus 440's from the thrift store yesterday, and the top is all scratched up. I was wondering if the finish is real, or if it is veneer or vinyl, because I wanted to restore them with Howard Restore-A-Finish (A.K.A. the best speaker restoring stuff EVER!). I have had good experiences with Restore-A-Finish, it restored my vintage Knight KN-3009 in no time at all, the same with my Realistic MC-800. So, do these speakers have real finish, veneer, vinyl, or some other stuff (tell me if it can't be restored)? Also, if they have something that can be restored, please tell me what Restore-A-Finish I would need to get, or if my walnut Restore-A-Finish will work. If I can't restore it, I'll just cover the top with a nice layer of vintage cameras ;) Thanks in advance!

The DB Pluses I have seen vinyl covering. Trying picking at a bottom back edge to see if stretches or tries to crack.

I tried to pick at a corner on the bottom back side, and it doesn't stretch or crack but it does bend. I would assume it's vinyl, but I don't know much about this kind of stuff.
 
You're pretty limited with vinyl regarding any kind of restoration to it. You could try using 0000 steel wool and see if it smooths the scratch some.
 
If it's vinyl there is nothing you can do to remove the scratches. Trying anything will just make it worse. I've removed vinyl covering from cabinets and replaced with veneer but that's a lot of work.

Hmmmmm... removing the vinyl and replacing it with veneer would be pretty cool- I have a pair of ugly Mitsubishi m-ss5's that have that stupid vinyl covering that makes it look like a rock, maybe I'll look it up on google and try it some time.

Sure the whole Db+ series had a vinyl covering over some type of press board/chip wood housing? Before API really got it all rolling strong
& found some great success with other lines. Still a great find & good speaker!:rockon: Congrats! :beerchug:Maybe try some Pledge:idea:
