Can you please help me troubleshoot noise with Nakamichi BX-2

Hey all,

I picked up a Nakamichi BX-2 locally today. The eject button was stuck so the cassette door was open, but I figured that'd be easy to address. The unit powers on, plays a tape, but didn't rewind or fast-forward when I initially tested it. I was eager to take it apart to look at the eject button and had experience having recently replaced belts and idler tire on a BX-1.

Regarding the fast-forward and rewind issue: I cleaned the idler tire with isopropyl. I also cleaned the capstan and pinch roller and the issue improved: I can FF now, but rewind is still pretty bad.

When I replaced the belts in my BX-1, there were two belts, one for the capstan motor/flywheel and the other that drove the counter. The BX-2 has a digital counter, so only one belt.

Question: Are the BX-1 capstan motor belt and BX-2 capstan motor belt the same?
Answer: Yes. I've downloaded the service manuals for both of these units and the BX-1 and BX-2 share the same part number for capstan motor belt - 0C80034A

Question: What about the idler tire?
Answer: I can't find the damn thing in the schematic (can someone point it out?), but it looks like they're the same based on some listings on feebay.

I'll replace both of those and I assume that the RW/FF issue will disappear.

My main issue: Horrible noise/feedback during playback. I made a video where I go through using my tuner and two tape decks, the noise is only apparent when using the BX-2 (not on the video, but I did indeed test the unit on both Tape 1 and Tape 2). Here's a link to the video - YouTube Video - the noise is most apparent at 24-25 seconds when I take the loudness switch off but it's there all the time.

I believe I've already tried different cables, but will try that in the morning just to make sure, but I think it has more to do with what's inside the unit.

How do I go about troubleshooting this issue?
Thanks!

If you've made it this far:
- Nakamichi BX-2 - I really want to fix this up and use it as my main deck until I find a good 3-head replacement)
- Nakamichi BX-1
- Sansui 9090DB
- Sansui AU-317 - I think I'm going to use this as a pre-amp for my TT, but haven't done that yet (might make a thread about it lol).

For posterity, a video of going through FF and RW that I took. I was mostly interested in seeing what moved when I hit which buttons, but perhaps it's helpful in helping me troubleshoot - YouTube Video

1) don't put a deck on top of a receiver or amplifier. The latter's transformer may couple with the playback head.

2) disconnect the BX-2 from everything else, then listen with headphones. What happens?

1) Nothing on top of receiver now.
2) Still present. Disconnected tape deck from receiver, plugged in headphones, powered on, listened, still noise.

Welp, I'm an idiot - I didn't hook up the ground after I disassembled last night. Hooked it up today and we're golden. Time to replace belt and idler tire.

Wow, I did the same thing with my BX-2 that I bought for $1 at a yard sale last summer. Very similar condition as yours, no FF, RW, or Play. I took the transport apart to clean up the idler and pinch roll. Forgot to reattach the ground and got that noise. It's been working fine since then. I've got an AU-317 also. I've been on a several year search for a matching tuner; had to settle for a TU-217 ii.
