Canon EOS 450D lens recommendation?

I have a Canon EOS 450D with the standard 18-55mm lens and I am feeling the need for a longer zoom lens - but really not sure exactly which model to buy.

The one I was looking as was this one "Canon 55-250mm EF-S f/4-5.6 IS Lens" but have heard that it is best to get a USM type, faster focussing? other advantages? - so I am wondering if I do get that lens, which fits my budget what will I lose by not getting a USM lens - or maybe a 70-300mm USM ?

The majority of my pictures are landscapes/still life/wild life etc - so maybe fast focussing is not something I really need.

Any advice and suggestions appreciated.

It really depends on your pocketbook and how much you can spend. A good lens for the money is the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens. This a major step up from your kit lens and an entry point into the pro series lens. The sharpness, color and contrast from this piece of glass is A+.

This is a time tested lens with thousands of very good reviews for you to wade thur if desired. There are currently 2 models available with the IS model costing twice as much as the one I listed. If taken care of this lens will only go up in value. Every Canon L series lens I own can be sold for more than my original purchase price.

Excellent suggestion for a lens of high quality that you may never feel the need to upgrade.
 
If you can spend a little extra, then the 70-200/4IS is one of the best lenses Canon has ever brought out in that focal range. The sharpness is top, focusing is extra fast and its also good in tracking birds in flight.
 
I also suggest the 70-200 f4 IS, as it will provide much better optics than either the 55-200 or the 70-300. Both of those are considered "entry level lenses," while the 70-200 is more of a serious amateur lens.
 
We are more than likely getting out of the OP price range with the IS model. Even the non IS is more than double the price of his stated budget.
 
Yes that is true, I can get the either of the lenses I mentioned for about £200 ($315) - the one recommended to me is about £500 ($786) - such a nice lens though...

It's going to be my chosen present for a significant up-and-coming birthday I have - I have asked for money to buy it - so we'll see what comes of that.
