Can't Stay Away From Those KG's!!!

Hi,
I need Help, Ladies and Gentleman!

I was cruising thru FB Market and a Guy just down the road had a bunch of stereo equipment, wanting $300 for everything.

Noticed a pair of Klipsch KG-2's and asked what he wanted for them? (the other stuff was junk!)

He said make an offer, I refused and told him give me your best price!

He said I will take $25 for all the KG-2's!

Turns out he had 3 KG-2's, I went and picked them up, listening to them now on my little JVC Reciever, and they are great sounding speakers, and sound bigger than they are in my large Bedroom.

I will recap the Crossovers, and clean them up but could not keep from getting them for that money!

I now have KG-2, 3, and 4's!!!

Hi,
Yes, they seem to punch above their weight class, the bass is impressive!

I use Steely Dan's "Aja" Album to test speakers with and did not hear anything missing!

Cleaned them up, wiped down with some #0000 steel wool and then a light restain and some BLO/Wax mix I have.

Cleaned the rubber surrounds with some 303 Protectant, they are not really in that bad of shape.

Caps have been ordered, and weather to install new Ti Tweeters, the jury is still out on???

I would call them a serious little speaker!

Wow, great score.
I have a pair and they indeed do punch above their weight for their size.
Mine are keepers, bought them from a garage sale in 1994 or so for 90.00.
I recapped and changed the tweeter ferrofluid in them a couple of years ago.
I went with this company for the parts kit.
Very happy with the difference in sound after the rebuild.
I had a backup pair I bought for 100.00 12 yrs ago but traded them last year along with 200.00 cash for an Adcom GFA5500. Win win.

Hi,
Used to run an Adcom Rig back in the 80's...

Moved to Puerto Rico, stayed 4 years and sold it there as I lived near the Ocean and had sea breeze through the House the whole time, never used AC, never needed it.

Figured the Stereo was better left there.

I went with another Crites Cap Kit, for these KG-2's, uses ERSE Caps and what I used to recap my KG-4's...

Also put in Crites Ti Tweeters and happy with that refurb.

I see Midwest Speaker has Ti Tweeters a little more affordable, but don't have any info on them???

Picked up the KG-4's for $135 and thought I got a bargain but outdid myself with these KG-2's!

very nice speakers...you've made them look great

Hi,
Well, got one of the KG-2's done today installing new Caps.

These were set up different than the KG-3 and 4's...

Also installed some protection for the passive Woofer.

Hooked the new recapped Speaker up and did an A/B Test so to speak.

The difference I heard is the sound is a little, admittedly not a lot but you can hear it, more focused or more sharp say.

As old as the Caps were, they were not going to get any better with time, so glad I'm doing it.

Sweet idea and fit on the passive protection. Doing my KG2.2's this week. Curious if the KG2's (yours) used the same caps (4 & 8uf)?

Hi,
Yep 4, 8 and 24, but Cap from Crites was a 25...

Looking at a set of Ti Tweeters next.

Was really amazed at the Bass and overall sound from these small speakers.

ALL my KG Speakers (also have pair of 3 and 4's) sound great to me, and easy to upgrade or maintain!

Gorgeous! Disappointment for me. KG2.2's recapped and mounted via wall mounts, no tweeter sound right channel. Opened it up yesterday, maybe the wire came off internally, nope completely dead tweeter (15Mohms). I swear they worked years back when I used them, oh well time for a replacement off the bay.

I am a fan of the KG4's also!! An under valued model in my opinion. I have Heresey II, Chorus II and La Scalas as well.

I've noticed the price on KG4's rising in the last year. At least the listing price. Not sure what they actually sell for. I paid $300 for my mint pair of KG's. Currently testing different capacitor brands in the KG4's. I have Clarity Caps, Jantzen Cross Caps and Erse on hand. Whichever brand sounds the best in the KG4's, will go into my Heresey II and Chours II for a cap refresh. My La Scalas has ALK's original Universals. Sound great by the way!! I think the current versions of the Universal have lower quality parts to keep the cost down.

Hi,
Thanks, if you are going to keep the KG-2.2's, I would use the opportunity to go ahead and put in a set of Ti Tweeters?

Still want to do that to my KG-2's, my 3 and 4's have had them put in already!

Im a big fan of the KG4’s Ive noticed the asking price is going up lately. I was wondering if the 2-3 and 4’s all use the same passive radiator?

Hi,
No, is the answer...

From what I see the 4's have a rear 12" passive, the 3's have a front 8" Passive and the 2's have a 10" rear Passive.

Very cool! Congrats on your find.
My very first Klipsch were a pair of KG3 that were in sad shape. But after fixing them up I was hooked.
I have the 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 (plus Heresy 1 and Cornwall II)
It took me about 3 years to find my 2.0 and they are my favorite for smaller space.

Hi,
My KG-3's sound fantastic...

Bought them for $75, they had a little veneer damage which I repaired as good as my ability.

Rebuilt the crossovers and installed a set of original Klipsch Ti Tweeters...

Actually using them in my workshop with a 90's JVC Receiver.

They deserve better, but where I need them at the moment.

I don't really see how to get a better bargain than to buy a pair of KG'S as low as possible, and then rebuild them...

To have a pair of really nice, serious Speakers!
