Cantilever Isn't Straight

Hello All

This is my first time posting and am looking for some advice.

I just purchased a Shure M97xE cartridge from Amazon and received it today. Upon opening the package and inspecting the cartridge I noticed that the cantilever is ever so slightly bent to the left, I'd say by about 0.25 - 0.5mm.

Will this small deviation cause any issues at all? Should I ask for a replacement and hope that I get one that's straighter?

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Happened to me too with the same cart and then with the replacement stylus. Twice! That was two years ago. It's 'good' to hear same old with QC down south. Send it back. I opted for a refund. Didn't get it. It's enough to develop a grudge.

Major bummer, especially with the recent, massive price hike. But is QC really the problem? Most cantilevers aren't bent, so they're quite capable of making a good one. Maybe they're just told to ship bad ones too, hoping whoever receives it won't care.

Did you order from Amazon? I did some looking around and found threads on other forums with people having the same issue, apparatnly all with carts bought from Amazon. My replacement should be here tomorrow so we'll see.

Perhaps Shure is sending all "close enough" carts to Amazon in the hopes that people just won't care/notice.

I live in Canada. The hiked up price is always our sale price.

I think blaming quality control is fair. Every factory which produces a product will have some which weren't made 100%. Its the job of QC to pick out the bad ones so they don't make it to the consumer. Perhaps Shure has two grades of acceptability. "OK" and "Close Enough". LOL

What massive price hike is that? I bought my first M97xE in 2007, and styli, even direct from Shure, are cheaper now at $59 than they were then, at least when buying from the local dealer that stocked them. Since that store went out of business (the owners retired), I've been getting mine from Amazon and have had no issues with out-of-alignment cantilevers. If some people are having this issue with Amazon, I'm wondering if anyone has contacted Shure directly for a warranty replacement. One would think they could check their stock and be sure to send a sample that is straight.

I had the same problem same seller. It was covered under warranty and I had a replacement quick. That one was fine. At least it is easy to return items to Amazon.

They're $99 on Amazon. They were ~$79 for years. All the Shure carts shot up in price by around $20 last year.

My mistake; somehow I got it into my head that we were talking about the stylus, which is currently $59. In my case, I bought my M97xE body from a local dealer in 2007 when he had them on sale for $99. List price at the time was, I believe, around $140. What's nice is that Shure has dropped the MSRP on both the complete cartridge and the replacement stylus compared to what they listed for a decade ago.

I just received the replacement cartridge today from Amazon. Looks like this one is ok. I was worried going in since I've heard multiple reports of people have to exchange the cartridge numerous times until they get a good one.
