CANTON CT-!000s - PLZ HELP.
DAMN ! think one of my Canton CT-1000s is messed up (BTW MY LUXMAN R-117is in repair) So found a Beautiful albeit cheap Onkyo TX 4500 Mk2. I know it's a "Sin" to use an 8 ohm receiver w/4ohm speakers -BUT in doing so -even at volume at 10:00 o'clock -12 being mid noticed one of my speaks is causing receiver to cut out - I KNOW IT'S THE SPEAK DOING SOMETHING -having tried different things( speak wires, different posts, wire gage etc) (the other speak functions fine at higher volumes) Any thought's/suggestions appreciated - Thnx

One channel cuts out? Both cut out? The Onkyo is stable to 4Ω so that shouldn't be an issue running 10 o'clock. Unless you have your bass and treble cranked with loudness on... Why do you think it's a speaker and not the receiver? Sounds more likely to me...
 
Hey appreciate the response. No It's none of those. . . It's not the channel -think it's the speaker. I can turn the other speak well over half -it's fine. The other w/the ONKYO just kinda stops playing -thus hearing a "click" from the receiver to RE. . . (BTW the fuse in the receiver doesn't blow.
Funny since my Luxman broke due to replacing the IR sensor (neglectfully w/out a solder thus blowing a capacitor) thinking that might have caused a malfunction in the speaker ? I tested a Yamaha 797 the other day w/a switch to 4 ohms - same thing except that receiver Completely turned of & had to be turned on. Thinking Unfortunately - I mess up the speaker's internal something. It's perplexing Geez. who knows how hard it would to fix a friggin Canton CT-1000 -parts etc must be hard to come by. . . .
 
Still sounds like the receiver is going into protection mode. I would guess there's an issue with one channel of the receiver, whatever that issue is. I guess you COULD try to rule out the speakers by hooking them to opposite channels (In other words, switch the left speaker to the right channel, and vice versa... If the problem switches channels, I guess that would narrow it down, since you said one speaker continued working fine.

I have a pair of speakers that I love, but had to box back up until I pick up a good-quality solid-stater that can run them without breaking a sweat. They're rated at 6 ohms, but the impedance can dip as low as 4.7-4.8 ohms on bassier parts (How else are they gonna' get 44hz extension with a 5" woofer?), so I really don't like the idea of running them off my Fisher tube receiver. Still not sure what to get. I'd rather go with something semi-vintage and bulletproof, like Crown maybe.

Yeah tried that/those (the other is fine) -unfort it's gotta be the speak. It's fine till I turn the volume dial up to 10 o'clock then it starts breaking up like a short or something followed by a slight "click" in the receiver after changing outta that specific chan. BTW - The Onk's OK -got it on CL for $100. Beautiful Dial ! & recapped. Had it's predecessor (an 85 wpc) in college & always fond of the Brand in it's Heyday.
Messed up my lux R-117 by putting a new IR sensor w-out soldering & blew a capacitor "pop!" although the CT's weren't in play an errant current musta fowled the "one" The other's fine. MY BAIN - "Playing w/matches . . ."
Funny found a great parts supplier in Holland that provided the sensor(made by Sansui) a perfect fit. It's a 3 prong fit & never thought I needed to solder.

One thing I've learned if into Vintage equip. AlwaysAlways Patronize US for Repair & Parts -THEIR THE BEST ! then know where to go outside for parts.

Welcome to AK! Where are you located? parts are not easy to come by in the US unless used. Do you have the tower or large bookshelf sized CT1000? Have you checked to see if all the drivers seem to be working? The only thing that could cause a channel to shut down if the speaker is running is an intermittent short.

GREAT NEWS/& not so Bad - IT"S NOT THE SPEAKER ! so one of the twins not sick - T G
-took it in to my friendly neighborhood Hi Fi Heaven Master in NoVa & he generously took the time - hooked it up to a specialized receiver/ ohmmeter & it worked fine. DARN !
He suggested a possible problem as speaker wire & took the time to provide a strand & artisan's effort to cut/solder 4 ends. (I forget sometimes the thick stuff is more harm than good in trying to connect vintage posts)
SO NOW EVEN MORE MYSTEROUS . . .got it home -hooked up to the same Onk same thing-then another (a lil Yamaha R-300. ) -same thing.
Note : I do have a pair of Karat 920s sittin on top of the Ct's & they always work fine on "A". Is there a field problem ? shud I attach new speak wire to the Karats ?

Those are wonderful, wonderful speakers. Everything is expensive on those. Maybe except the input terminals.
 
So did you track down the source of the problem in playing the speakers with your home gear?
