Canton CT-90 Speakers

I posted a 'want-it/trade for it' here on AK and CL looking for a set of Cerwin Vega D-9s. Well, a local guy contacted me to see if I might be interested in a set of Canton CT-90s he had. :saywhat:

I told him, I had never heard of them...but with a million speaker manufacturers having come and gone throughout my life...not a big surprise.

He told me that he had them since new and quit using them some years ago, when he became a parent. He went on to say the speakers are mint and he was going to advertise them, just had been too busy. He also was not keen on bothering with packing/shipping....maybe we can deal?:scratch2:

I will get a chance to see them tomorrow.

I would most likely be using them with my 2505 Mac to listen to Jazz and Vinyl. The baby Mac is ony 50WPC...but should be ok at the levels I use for bourbon and vinyl-time...:drunk:Although I'm certain my 700M Kenny would make them sing too.

Anyway...I could not find 'squat' about this series of Cantons. Plenty about Cantons...just not these.

Anyone ever have these, or listen to any?

On rare occasions my wife and I like to relive our youth with some other music that the D9s seem to welcome...
Sometimes we crank the Pioneer Spec-2 with Mick Jagger or the likes...but usually after we have had a couple good martinis:smlove: At my age...whatever it takes to get the job done

Can't seem to find anyone in the states that has them....

His are mohogany, which my wife prefers...

The owner was 'on the road' and did not have a picture...so I look forward to seeing and hearing them.

I have Canton's and they are associated with Luxman, or back when I got mine they were. They are wonderful speakers and in the German way, wonderfully made. The are 4 ohm and do require plenty of juice to goose them.

I think after you audition them, you may be taking them home!!!

Get the cantons. I still have my Karat 60's which are pictured in my avatar. Mine are mahogany so yours might look like mine. Good luck...I am about to sell mine as I just recently picked up some Pioneer CS-R700's and today at a thrift store I scored a set of Pioneer HPM-150 that need foam only for $99.00. Enjoy the Cantons! :thmbsp:

Got 'em

Well, just did the deal.

Running them through my Kenwood 9600...only thing easy to get to right now.

They are very nice and sound great to me...although I have only reviewed them for about an hour so far....1/2 hour with Jazz fm station, 1/2 hour on the turntable....mixture of stuff.

I think I'll keep them.:yes:

The guy said he was 'winnowing' his collection and had some stuff he was planning on selling but never did...and would I like to take it for free!?

He gave me a Amber Model 17 preamp, Nak CR 1A cassette deck a Yamaha CDC-96 cd player and some high-end speaker cables....:screwy:

I did not need any of it....but what the heck...I may someday...that's what I told the wife, anyway.

The Amber preamp is something that I had never even heard of...I'll do some seaching to see what I can about it.

Guy told me he got it at a high-end store years ago and has not used it for a decade...so who knows.

I must say, the more I listen to these Cantons, the better I like them:thmbsp:

Those Cantons are beautiful speakers. I have never hear their home speakers before, but I do have a couple of sets of their component car speakers from 1988. A set 400, and a set 600. Same tweeters are the home speakers you have there. They were VERY expensive when new. I was able to get them at cost since I worked at a high-end car stereo shop way back then, otherwise I would have never been able to afford them. With the exception of the set 600, they are in excellent shape for having been in 3 different vehicles.

Here's a pick of the set 400. I had them out earlier today because I am thinking of putting them in an enclosure to make a nice set of bookshelves. I would have to have an amp that is 4 ohm stable of course. These have the fabric dome tweeters, the set 600 is a three way that has the titanium tweeters, and are almost the same as your speakers there. Made in WestGermany. I would love to have a pair of Canton home speakers, though they are as rare as chicken dentures around here these days. So, I will make some.:yes:

You should not have any trouble finding an amp to handle those.

I just lucked into the home set. The guy told me that the ones I have were like $3K new...??? Regardless, they really do sound nice.

Let us know if you get those boxed-in and going.

Canton is good stuff!

I really loved my Karat 40's. Really regret selling them! Smooth, clear and an amazing low end. I would take them over just about any similar sized JBL's (that I love), and most other brands. I didn't realize what I had. If I ever run across another pair, I'll keep them forever, I think they're that good. Maybe not for my main system, but absolutely not second rate/garage 'blaster' speakers either. Like a big version of those wonderful little ADS speakers. It's been said by some that I always give the :thmbsp: to every speaker I post about. I just happen to like to stay positive. This is one case when I can whole heartedly say that 'Canton' must mean quality in German . Here are my sorely missed Karat 40's.

I've got four of the Karat 20s, and love them. Neve have owned the bigger ones, but would love to.

My first Cantons were the Plus S, they still impress me ~20 years later.

There's also pairs of the Canton Quinto 510 and Canton Patio 160 here.
