Canton Quinto 520 Thread

Small update and correction. In my second post here in this thread I wrote that the woofer part number is 3159. I don't know how I missed the mistake for so long but the correct part number is 3156. The previous post has been corrected.

Now while looking for a 3156 to replace the bad one from my first set of Q-520's I found that the predecessor to the 520, the GLE-60 uses the same woofer. So we now have a useful parts donor speaker for replacement woofers.

So I just bought a pair of 3156's out of GLE-60's for the nice price of €44. The reason for that is that last month I found a second orphan 520 in walnut and can now put a pair together. :banana: They will be going to one of my daughters as a birthday present to replace a pair of JBL TX-70's that are now doing duty in her system. I'm finding that it really pays off to keep my eyes open for orphan speakers. They generally can be had for very low prices and all one needs is patience to put together some very reasonably priced speaker sets.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I'm in love with my current Quinto 510 and hoping to find an affordable upgrade for my stereo system.

I was thinking of a good pair of Quinto 520 or a more recent pair of Karat 200 (both around €150 a pair)... and I found some significant differences between these 2 models that I want to share with you. Of course, thanks in advance for your help.

Even when the woofer, high, and mid are the same size (in fact, the treble and mid appear to be exactly the same(*) and the woofer is some sort of upgrade from the old Quintos), the crossover configuration is actually different (850 -5000 in Quintos and 900 -3600 in Karats)....this is strange to me as they both seem to have the same high and mid, and you are subtracting 1400hz from the mid band....even as I've read that the mids are the worst part of the Quintos. Does that make any sense?

(*)Another question is regarding some Quinto 520's having wires on their highs and mids (like the older GLE models) and others not (my 510 doesn't have wires on the highs and mids). It looks like the newer versions of the 520 are using the same drivers (high and mid) as the Karat 200...and here is my question...is it possible that those newer Quintos have the same drivers (mid and high) and the same crossover as well as Karat?

All these questions are looking for an answer... what would be the best Quinto 510 upgrade? Quinto 520 (older versions/newer versions) or Karat 200? would be a noticeable improvement?

Having owned both Quinto 520 (still own) and Karat 200 (sold) I would say that a second generation Karat 200 is the better choice.
The 200's have a little better bass, have no hearable loss in the mids, and have far better wire connections with binding posts rather than spring clips.

I kept the Quinto 520's rather than the 200's because of their smaller size and am using them as surround rears rather than main listening speakers. For 2-channel listening speakers I would have kept the Karat 200's.

Thanks a lot! @Bratwurst7s . Your feedback is really useful for me. Your Quintos are those with wired highs and mids or the newer version (with no visible wires)?

When you talk about Karat MkII, you mean those 8 Ohms impedance rated with banana plugs compatibility, Am I right?
 
What about some newer Ergo 32 DC? Do you think these newer boxes could provide better results than the older Karat 200??

It took me a little while to understand what you mean in regards to "visible wires" concerning the tweeters and mids.

I am guessing that you are referring to the tinsel wires. Early drivers with aluminum faceplates had the tinsel wires coming out of the front of the domes in an arc and entering the faceplate from the front. Later drivers had plastic faceplates and the tinsel wires were routed behind the plate. Is this what you are referring to?
I have never heard a difference between the 2 different versions of the drivers, and I have owned speakers with both driver versions. The one advantage of the later version with the hidden wires is that you can buy replacement domes+voicecoil wires to repair damaged drivers.

As far as I know both early and late versions of the Karat 100/200/300 were available in both 4 and 8 ohms impedance. The 2nd version have screw type binding posts while the 1st version have spring clip connections. The spring clip version does at least accept larger diameter wire than the Quinto's.

I have never owned or listened to any Ergo series speakers, so I can not give you an answer based on experience. Sorry. But my guess is that an Ergo speaker will sound pretty good.

Just to keep the conversation up to date, I finally found a pair of Ergo 32 DC in perfect conditions for a very tempting price (90€ pair) so.... my collection has been increased!!

Just for someone looking for info about this newer model of Canton... hope to not taint your thread with info about other model, so please forgive me in advance.

Ergo 32 DC has only 2 drivers, but a huge 220mm bass unit, and a bass reflex enclosure (rear ported):

They are really good looking with a kind of velvet finish in the front. I was looking for a wooden veneer version, but there were no good options, so these are black.

The sound is clearly more deep than the Quinto 510... really huge difference (obviously, keeping in mind the BR configuration and the bigger bass driver). The overall impression is you're in front of a much bigger speaker (and it is... is very big for a bookshelf speaker).
