CAP QUESTION??

VINTAGEO

Newbie in New B.
Hi all, I want to recap some Klipsch KG-4s and was wondering if there is a big difference in brands besides price?
I am comparing Solen poly caps and Dayton Poly caps, the solens are about double the price at PE
Any help is appreciated.

Those are about in the same league. There are only very minor differences in sound if your one of those people that can hear these things.

The bigger issue is the size of the caps. The Daytons can get very long in the higher values so be sure to measure the space you have and check the caps sizes before you buy them.

The next step up are caps like the Audyn Cap Plus and the Jantzen Audio Z-Superior Capacitor. The problem with these are they cost big $$$ and they are huge so they are not practical for most people.

I like the Audyn Q4 or Jantzen Cross-Cap for a good bang for the buck cap.

There is a huge difference in brands. You can buy the cheapest you can find or buy Deulands flagship caps and spend thousands doing so. They all sound different. Neutral sounding is the keyword. You can buy a Yugo or buy an AMG. Theres a reason the highest end speakers in the world use the highest end materials they can aquire. With the klipsch speakers you have you may not need to recap unless they have electrolytic capacitors. I would check them with a fluke meter before just changing them to see if the values are still within spec.

I'm not sure I would use the "highest end" speakers logic to choose a capacitor for a set of KG4's. I have always had good results with Dayton caps.
I freshened up a pair of KG4's recently and purhased the caps and diaphragms from Bob Crites... I dont remember the brand he shipped. It was less a money decision and more that I just wanted to support the guy's business.

Thanks everyone, I believe the Crites caps are solens.
The reason I asked the question was just to compare those 2 caps I mentioned. I realize caps will be different, and more so if paying a premium, but I also don't want to put $2000 caps in a set of $400 speakers! lol
My KGs already have crites tweeters, and sound really good, I think that the 1 electrolytic is the only one I"ll change out as I believe the polys to be fine.

Before spending any serious money, maybe consider active crossover and ditching all the passives altogether.
