Capacitors in 2230

I've been comparing different Marantz receivers via the web. I noticed something interesting in that some of the older models like the 2230 have three huge capacitors while later models have smaller capacitors. I am curious as to why this is.

2230 caps

The 2230 has cap coupled output to the speakers ( 2 caps ) and the 3rd cap is the power supply filter cap. Several early 70's receivers were cap coupled and then the designs evolved to direct coupled outputs. The 2230 is a nice receiver.
 
That helps. Those must be the caps between the amp and the speaker. Isn't direct coupling better?

BTW, I am considering a 2226B also. Any information on that one?
 
I saw on a thread somewhere that the 2330B isn't capacitor coupled. That's interesting because I thought that the 2330 is the one that most people want.
 
All 22xx series were pretty good units. Don't get hung up on the technical stuff.
How do they sound to your ears?
Check condition and go from there.
From experience I know the 2215b is a great little unit and the 2230 will outperfom it's wattage and specs. It's a very enticing and non fatiuging receiver to listen to.
 
I have a Marantz 2230 at home.
Being capacitor coupled has it's advantages when running vintage speakers like KLH 6 and 17's.
Speakers from the 50's & 60's were "voiced" using tube amps.
Capacitor coupled amps present an impedance similar to a tube amp.
A direct coupled amp does not.
Hook a pair of old KLH 6's to a Marantz 2230 receiver, then to a newer say NAD receiver....and you WILL hear a difference.

IMO direct coupled amps do not sound "better", only different compared to the older design cap coupled units.To my ears as a rule cap coupled sounds
warmer/more tube like, and the later DC amps have a brighter sound.My Sansui 5000X sounds way different than my Pioneer SX-1050.What ever sounds good to you.

The 2330 and 2330B are both DC coupled.
That said, the 2230 is one of my very favorite (maybe even my fav) sub-50wpc receiver.
