Cart/stylus options

Hey all,

Very shortly I'm getting my hands on a Pioneer PL-12D, it comes with an Excel ES-70S, not sure of the milage on the stylus. Seller thing it may be conical, can post pics when I get the table hopefully today.

Should I just look for a stylus upgrade, or just go for a new cart all together. I previously was looking to get an Ortofon 2m Blue for my LP120 before I came across this table. Would that be a solid choice, I know someone who has one and loves it. I don't really know what else to look for so I want to get some other opinions. My budget is around 300 CAD.

I already have a Gredo ZT+ cart with a green stylus, and I find it just ok, I recently used my friends Dual that has a 165e on it, and it sounded cleaner to me.

Thanks for any help

I have both the Ortofon Blue and the Nagaoki MP-200.
The Blue is a great value but the Nagaoki is even more so even at a higher first cost. Both should be in your price range although I'm not up on today's exchange rates.

Unfortunately rates on stuff like this are crazy on Canada (at least form what I've seen anyways) the Nagaoka MP200 is like $500-$600. Pricing put the MP110 closer to the price of the 2M Blue, at about 250. I feel like the blue is probably the best bang for the buck I can get right now. Just wanted to see what other options people could recommend.

So I've heard, I just wanted to get some feedback before I took the plunge. But it seems like it's the right choice.

Thanks for the replies my dudes

The Ortofon 2M Red is one of several cartridges that I use on my PL12D and it works very well (despite what some people say about this cartridge) and I'm sure the 2M Blue would be even better - these cartridges are on the bright side but very dynamic and detailed. The price of the MP-110 seems rather high for a cartridge with a bonded elliptical stylus. I would also look at the AT-VM95 range - you may well find that the AT-VM95EN with nude elliptical stylus is cheaper than the 2M Blue and you may even find the AT-VM95ML with nude MicroLine stylus for a similar or cheaper price. The MicroLine stylus is an excellent tracker, although in my experience the AT-VM95 cartridges are not quite as punchy as the Ortofon 2M cartridges.
