Cartridge/Stylus Recommendations

I have an Audio-Technica AT4414S (AT14S) and Shure M912ED (M91ED). The stylus on both cartridges are broken. I'm trying to decide which cartridge/stylus combination to go with.

The AT4414S with a Audio-Technica Shibata stylus or the M912ED with the JICO SAS stylus. Both stylus are about the same price.

I'm currently using a Grado Black on a Technics SL-D2 and am looking for less surface noise.

Any recommendations?

G'day mate, I have the Shure M91ED with the Jico SAS stylus and it is excellent. I find it 'very quiet' in the groove as well! Regards, Felix aka catman.

If your primary goal is less surface noise, you may be hard-pressed to better the Grado. Both Grados I own (Platinum Reference & ME+) are remarkably quiet in the groove.

I also own an Audio Technica AT12S and Shure M91ED (w/Hi-Track stylus). Both very nice.

Maybe the answer is to buy replacement styli for both cartridges?

As a suggestion maybe consider mating your Shure M91 cart with a Jico SAS stylus from Jico Stylus Japan for about US$100.00.
The lift in performance makes it a truly stunning cartridge/stylus combo.
Cheers.

Ditto on the above re: the M91ED + Jico SAS. That combo will kick your Grado Black to the curb (and I'm a Grado fan).

How are the ME+ since i think they fit my budget the best, i would be using this as a primary cartridge/stylus

The AT and Shure will both be excellent with the replacement stylii you are considering. Neither will be better than the other, IMO. Slightly different tonal balance, perhaps, but that's a matter of personal preference.

Shure will be a bit more mellow with a tad fuller midrange, but both are excellent. Cymbals will be quite nice with the AT and a shibata. If you like jazz drums, the AT will please :)
