carver amp question

i have a carver tfm-15cb power amp with output meters.

my question is, there is a switch for the meter range that says X 0.1 when pushed in.

what would be the diffrences in the 2 settings and which will be the most accurate?

the X1 setting makes the meter read output watts. If the meter reads 10W on this setting then you're outputting 10W.

the X 0.1 setting makes the meter 10x more sensitive. If the meter reads 10W on this setting you're outputting 1W.

My amp has the same switch on the meters. Given that the vast majority of my listening is only 1 or 2 watts, I leave the switch on the X 0.1 setting pretty much all the time. That way the meters actually move while the music plays.

Unless you calibrate the meters, neither setting is guaranteed accurate. The meter circuit of some amps actually measures the output voltage, but others don't... they'll measure perhaps the input to the power amp section and scale it using the (theoretical or measured) amplification factor. Meters are eye candy anyways, does it really matter if they're 100% accurate?

mine dosnt say x1, just x .1.

when i have the switch pushed in, the meters read higher at any given volume then when its switched out.

so i take it, with the switch in, it reads higher than its actually putting out.
with the switch out, its reading what it is actually doing?

Like I said, the switch makes the meters 10X more sensitive. When the switch is out, the setting is X1. If you only listen to 1 or 2 watts and the meters peak at let's say 100W, the meters will not deflect appreciably under normal listening conditions. People like to see meters move, so the engineers gave them this switch.

Funny you brought this up. I have been running my 15cb for years and I forgot all about the meter power switch. Mine is in the high setting and I drive it up to the top a lot. I had a relay problems a few years ago but once I repaired that it has run almost every day since. I have five Carvers, love them all.

this one is growing on me nicely. i think i may grab the other one the guy has at the end of the week.:yes:
run them in mono on my kappa 6.1's and timeframe 600's.

This is a very nice sounding amp.
The lights behind my meters are out. Is this an easy fix?

after you pull the cover off, there will be a thin bar that the meters are mounted to. they will have 2 small screws, one at each end.
pull the bar off and the meters will/ should come out with them, if not just pull them back.
the lights will be behind them.

ive seen led replacements on the bay in diffrent colors. i think i may score a set of the red led's for mine.

you will need an angled phillips screw driver for the 2 screws as the heat sinks are kinda in the way.

do not know the specs on the led's.
they are led's that plug into the bulb sockets.

i have a question,
when i bridge this amp, do i need to use both gain controls on the front or do i adjust just one?

i had an alesis amp that when bridge, you only used one level control and left the other one all the way down.
