Carver C-4000 vs. Audiolab 8000C

I'm looking for a preamp to accompany Odyssey Stratos Monoblocks and Klipsch La Scala speakers. Which would you choose, between the Carver C-4000 and the Audiolab 8000C, if they were priced about the same?

Or would you choose something else - what else & why? Solid State or Tube?

If your interested in Carver, look at the C1 or C11. Very good pre with lots of features and down the road it can be modded with the BillD mod. Lot's of info over at "TheCarverSite".

Bill, thanks for the reply. Audiogon-wise the C1 / C11 are about half the cost of the C-4000. What do you like so much about the C1 / C11?
 
I have the 4000t and love it! It has a **** load of features as well. It's big though if space is a consideration.
The C-1 are nice as well.
 
Just sold off my C4000 to pay bills. I REALLY wanted to like it being a child of the 80s but never quite warmed up to it. Too many knobs and **** that got in the way of the music. Thought about modding it but never had the time. Maybe I'll fix up that rusty Phase Linear preamp I have somewhere.

The Adcom preamps are a very nice deal and I regret selling my 565 pre. I still have a GTP-400 and that ain't going nowhere.
 
I used to sell Carver and Audiolab when those were current models. I much preferred Audiolab sonically, they were far better built and more reliable. The earlier grey units sounded pretty flat but the later all black ones were very nice. Carver wins on features.

In my system at least, it sounds very clean, uncolored, natural sound. The features are interesting, especially the holographic effect, gives you a live venue feeling, more dimensionality, though I usually have it off. If you're running inefficient speakers, the gain feature is great to have.
I did notice playing my Denon DM 103 MC cart seemed to lack detail in the highs though where the Ortofon Red sounds fabulous.
