Carver Cube M-400

Does anyone know about this? A friend has given me on consignment a Carber Cube, a Yamaha C6 Amp to go with it and a Yamaha CR 840 to test drive. I'm going to buy either the cube with the amp or the Yamaha CR 840 alone. I need some opinions and help. Certainly the cube is more interesting.

The Carver cube is a power amp only and the Yamaha C-6 is a preamp. Are they being offered at the same price???? If so, take the C-6 and the Carver cube over the CR-840. Well, that's my vote anyway. The Yamaha C-6 will have, probably, better phono section. Taking the separates makes you not get a tuner in the deal, however.

What do your ears tell you?

Your own sonic preferences are probably the most important factor in this decision.

I'll pretty much always take a separate pre/power amp combo over an integrated amp or receiver anymore. Not saying I won't take a receiver or integrated....I just wouldn't use them. But they'd better be cheap.

Get the Yamaha 840. I own a Carver cube. I've had it since new and it just now needs to be repaired. Despite it's nearly 30 years of faithful service I wouldn't buy another. and am debating even repairing this one.

The problem is they are odd. The look alone puts a lot of people off them. And they don't stack well in any conventional system. And the Yamaha will probably prove to be more reliable and have a higher resale value in the future.

I have 2 of the Carver "Cubes"

The M-400 and the M-400a. The 400a since 1981 and you couldn't pry it from my cold dieing hands. I just had it restored after 29 faithful years and it probably really didn't need it. I just did it because of its age. It was working fine the day I shipped it. It sounds great now that its back though. The 400 I picked up off ebay fairly cheap and thats being restored now. Who cares where it sits on a rack, it's what it can do and how it sounds to you!!!!

Let's see...

60 wpc Yamaha Receiver OR Separates including Yamaha C6 and 200 wpc Carver Power Amp

No contest...go with the separates!

That was my first stereo set up in 1981! I bought a Carver Cube, Yamaha C-6, Yamaha TT, Nakamichi 480 and Dahlquist DQ-10s for a total of $2,200 and enjoyed it for many years. I still have the DQ-10s, but the preamp, TT and cassette deck are long gone. I had the Cube repaired by Rita for a flat $179 recently but it only sold on eBay for $175. Never could figure out that sale but the buyer I'm sure is still happy. Yamaha generally made pretty good preamps in the 80's.
