Carver TFM-15CB

bre's dad

I drank what?!?
I remember as a kid that Carver amps were pretty high end, back in the day anyway. Any thoughts on how they really are? Looking at a Carver TFM-15CB. I've currently got an old Pioneer sx-939 with a channel going out in the amp stage I'd use as a preamp, at least for now. i figure this is a good excuse to go back into the world of components (used to have an Adcom GFA-555 II w/ pre set about 10 years back. Loved the thing but to sell due to much needed vehicle replacement.) Alot of the Adcom stuff is out of my range that I've seen, but this is within my price range.

Tfm

Was this "Transfer Function Modification"?

I replaced my 250wpc Carver M-500t with a 225wpc
TFM-?? in the late 80's and what a difference! Made a big improvement in the sound of my AR9 LSi's. (geez, do I wish I still had those!) This should sound nice through your vintage "preamp".

I just worked on 4 of the Carver TFM amps. TFM-45, and TFM-10, I think. There were 2 or 3 models in the lot. The design is almost the same in all of them. They all sound very good. They use opamps in the frontend of the amp, and if you don't like the sound you can always try a different opamp. They are well built but there is a common problem with bad solder joints on the caps on the input of the amp boards. So if you have a channel out, resolder the cap and all will be well.

how would one compare a carver to a similarly speced adcom? There's a few on ebay I'm looking at. In this case an adcom gfa-535 and gfa-5200

Adcom

My old GFA-535 II was a really nice sounding amp. The 555 was that and much more! I never "heard" my Kappa 7's before unitl they got paired with the 555! Nice deal on Audiogon for a GFA-545. Check it out.

Dr Audio nailed the biggest issue with the Carver, from my research. He's correct, they are very well built.

But, there's an occasional problem with solder joints going bad on caps, and occasionally on wires. I doubt as common as some folk may make it out to be, but a few snuck by the quality control dept, it seems. Maybe it was a bit of lazy worker syndrome/friday afternoon soldering?

Another thing I see wrong with them, more common, is a single meter or both meters inoperative. I dunno how easy it is to fix this, or what the problem is, but there are just enough with meter issues to have it stuck in my head as a potential problem. Anyone have insight on this?

Now, as to sound, I've heard people say both good and bad about them. I've heard a few myself, and while some claim that some model Carvers are grainy, I've not experienced it. I like the sound of Carver gear very much, I find it impressive and of quality, and the earlier Phase Linear stuff too.

As for the Adcom gear, it's well-built, and solid, and good stuff too. Only one friend of mine who owns one has complained about the sound- calling it a bit sterile, clinical, no warmth. I'd venture it's more like Yamaha gear, which I own, very accurate and clean, and quality sounding. Most owners sing praise about 'em. I'd not hesitate to get an Adcom piece either.

For rumor sake, I've read here and elsewhere "supposedly" the 535 is nicer sounding than the 545 and 555 (and less common 565). I can't confirm this, but it's rumored to be true.

I'm rambling- sorry. I'd not turn down either amp- I think they are both excellent pieces, and I'm sure to bring you lots of joy.

Good luck, and keep us posted on your final choice!!!

Out of the 4 amps I worked on, 4 had the bias misadjusted; 3 so low they had crossover distortion. It may be there are some inexperienced techs out there misadjusting these, resulting in some with "grainy" sound. It sure would make them sound like crap if there is no bias!

I've always liked Carver gear, and I still own a Carver pre-amp and 3-head cassette deck. I used to have a TFM-25 (225 wpc) driving my Infinity RS-IIIb's. The sound was okay, but the bass was a bit flabby, like the amp didn't really have control of the woofers. When I tried an Adcom GFA-555II (200 wpc), the bass was tighter, more extended, and was definitely more tuneful. I bought the Adcom (still have it today) and sold the Carver. Admittedly, these Infinity's can be a tough load, dropping below 2 ohms at some frequencies, so maybe the Carver was just not a good match with these speakers. But for my application, the Adcom amp clearly worked and (more importantly) sounded better. YMMV.

If there is ANY way you can audition the amp with the speakers you will be using, you should do it.

adcom vs. carver

I ended up winning the Adcom. I would really rather have the Carver, but as it approached $300 it rapidly spun out of my price range. They'll be others. Perhaps the audio gods were smiling on me last night becasue as I cried watching the Carver slip out of my grasp, I found a Adcom GFP-550 surround sound preamp for practially nothing (much less I've seen 450's & 500's go for w/o the surround sound stuff), close enough to make a day trip and get. Yeah, its only pro logic & not AC-3/Dolby Digital, but I don't care. Music only for this bad boy... leave the home theater to my H/K, Mits, Paradigm set up (and the lowly Zenith all-in-one upstairs, which actually doesn't sound bad when you put a good lightweight set of speakers on it.) Photos to come when my toys arrive.

I bought my TFM-15 cb not working and it had a bad solder joint at one of the relay contacts. Later the problem cam back and I had to adjust the contacts wiping so they would stay clean. Since the repair it has been flawless running 4-2 ohm load all the time.Never gets hot. I also have a PM-900 that I run 4-2 ohm loads on and never have had a problem. The sound is good with no grainess that some mention.I use a KA7300 as the preamp on the PM-900 and a Marantz 1060 as the preamp for the TFM-15.
