Cassette Deck Repair in Albuquerque?

Hi, I need to find someone in Albuquerque who can do component level repair on my Tascam 122. Transport it great (serviced that myself). Plays fine, but left channel is out and right is noisy on record. Unit does not use rec/play switches, it's all electronic. It would take a signal generator and scope to trace the circuit using the schematic (available free online). Would also need levels, speed, and bias checked and set. I had at a place called vintage audio joe and that was a disaster. He had it 3 months and did not fix it.

The deck weighs 20 pounds, there is no original box anymore, and packing/shipping is very very expensive. So I'd like to find someone locally. Does not need to be a shop, a retired tech would be fine. So far I can find NO one who can do this kind of work anymore. Everyone who used to do it around here has passed away.

I know you don’t want t to ship anything but you may want to reach out to Ben. He does amazing work, and his prices are great. Not sure if he will take on a cassette deck or not, but can’t hurt to ask.

Thanks, I contacted Ben to see if he can work on it. Another audio karma person was in contact with me several months ago and he thought he could fix it as well. And Tascam refers people to something called Tap Electronics, located in CA. Problem with all this is shipping is expensive. ups can be as high as $150. usps is usually cheaper (maybe $50 - $80) but incredibly slow. And that's just one way, add that in again for return shipping. Without an original box, especially with a deck as heavy as this one, damage out and/or back is very possible (it had shipping damage when I got it but it was minor and I was able to fix that myself). Also have to add in this "new" repair as well. This second repair, added to the previous one (which I'll never get my money back on) added to the original purchase, I'll have spent way too much trying to get this thing fixed!

Right now (unless I can figure out some way to get it fixed) my plan is to just use the Tascam as a player in the den, and to get something else that's newer and has been gone through (belts, idler tires at a minimum) beforehand and guaranteed to be working. However, I'll see what Ben says.

you also may want to try randy, ikd if he works on decks tho. Can’t hurt to ask and he’s in AZ if I remember correctly

I'll let you know, but I have had NO luck at all. I've called and contacted all sorts of people. Most of the techs that used to do this kind of stuff are retired or have passed away. I can tell you one place to avoid, and that's "vintage audio joe." I would not recommend that one. And unfortunately, that one seems to be the only option locally.

Yep. And check the reviews on the chamber of commerce site. At least I wasn't alone.
