Castle Stirling 3....

I had a pair of big 3 way Castle Richmonds from the 70s before they went bust. I'm not sure who they're owned by nowadays but it's different from the old Castle.

These had all cast frame drivers made by Castle and the heaviest cabinets I have ever broken my back lifting. Cross-braces back and forth like nothing else. Unfortunately only one woofer was present and that needed foam - I was never able to find its mate so I gave them away. Castle apparently now have no connection nor do they have any parts from before the bust.

As a BIG fan.....and owner (B&W DM12 & Celestion 3).....of small British speakers, I'd LOVE to hear a set of Castle's!!

Steve

I went a bit ga-ga when I saw them up for grabs myself. Oh- and like Botrytis, I own Royds too. Awesome brand as well.

Bill- glad you like them!

I have a set of Castle Durham bookshelf speakers, remarkable sound from a very compact unit. They are a very nice match to the Luxman L-410 amplifier that I am temporary using. :thmbsp:
There is another similar set for sale locally.

I saw that ad after you bought them, and thankfully you did else I would have to be pissed for letting a deal slip through my fingers. I do love british speakers!

I have read good things about the brand throughout the years, but never had an opportunity to hear them.

Sounds like you found a winner there Bill :thmbsp:

I will...and they help to take my mind off of your Avatar creepiness...:D

The power of the bucket compels you...

Regarding Royd...Deli was telling me about these...really peaked my curiosity...

The Gentleman I purchased my Hales Rev 3's from had a nice pair of Royd's and they would have been my third choice of his selection.
He also had a beautiful pair of another relatively unknowns, monolithic 5+ foot tall, 150 Lb Duntechs that were #2 on my wanted list, (not sure I would have been able to afford them IF they were #1 on my wanted list anyways).

to end my digression,
Glad you like them Bill, they are great speakers!
I knew the next owner would be pleasantly surprised:yes:
happy listening!

To take this back on topic here are pictures of Bills Stirling 3's till he posts some of his own.

Tell us more about the construction-

I take it these are ported at the very bottom- and thus somewhat adjustable for port response by re-configuring them from the floor via spikes? Or is it the bottom plate?

I'm not sure if this is correct or if I misread this somewhere.

And what's the impedance and ohm rating?

Driver material (both tweets and midbass drivers)?

Most importantly, frequency response, and how they handle bass, midrange and highs.

Thanks fellas!

Hi Paul...lets start with the porting...
The down-firing port is actually located between the base and plinth. There are 4 screws located on the bottom of the plinth that you can tune buy adjusting them up or down...pretty cool, huh?
from the web-page...
The new design also uses a downward firing reflex port, venting between the cabinet and the plinth, this space being variable to allow for optimum room matching and more flexible placement options.

Stirling 3

Thanks to a programme of continuous research and development, Castle brings refinement to a new reflex ported design in Stirling 3, and replaces the world famous Severn model. For this completely new design, we have chosen fully shielded drive units to ensure optimum performance in both stereo and AV or multi-channel modes. The drivers themselves, Castle's renowned 28mm soft dome tweeter, as used in their most expensive designs, and two 130mm die cast bass-mid units are deployed in a d'Apollito arrangement, with the bass units symmetrically placed above and below the tweeter. The improved image location conferred by this configuration makes the Stirling 3 the ideal companion speaker

To my ears...they handle all frequencies very well...the mids are simply off the hook.
The down-firing port offer very realistic & not artificial (ie, CV) low frequencies.
The Tweeter is amazing...tons of snap & sizzle...
They are a very easy non fatiguing speaker to listen to.
