CD Player Choice

carbonman

It's All About The Music
Alright, you folks have me a little nervous. I had my CAL CL-10, McIntosh C712 & MC7270 stolen and was going to buy a MCD201, C45 and MC252 to replace them. The problems I've seen reiterated with the MCD201 makes me wonder if I'm making a good choice.
What do you think of the Marantz SA8001 as a CD player? Is it a good alternative or should I be prepared to ride out any problems with the MCD201 as long as my dealer understands it's subject to any noise/lockup problems being resolved to my satisfaction?

I would go ahead and get the MCD201. The only different thing I guess after
reading all the posts made regarding is that I would listen to the one I intended to bring home before the transaction occurred. If it is quiet I would go for it, I do not recall any report of a quiet one locking up. If not quiet I would tell them to get me one that is and call me to come get it.

Hmmmm. This kind of question almost caused a riot here recently!:D I haven't heard the Marantz so I can't comment there. As for the 201, if you want my honest opinion I would not personally risk it unless your dealer will let you open and listen without putting down any cash first (which may not be possible if your dealer has to order them specially for you). My comments are, of course, based on my own experience with it.

I don't tend to be lucky with repeat machines hence my aversion to get further examples in.

Witness my Omega Seamaster which leaked during a dive, was replaced and virtually never left the repair-shop. The crowning glory was when after 3 months at the shop (because apparently something inside snapped??) the manager said "don't worry now, we have been over it head to toe, we guarantee the repair for one year, I am sure it will be fine. Oh, wait we forgot to reset the time, let me just re-set it for you."

At which point he adjusted the watch and the adjustment crown fell off onto the ground! I almost died laughing!!!!!! :D :D :D

Carbonman,

Sorry to hear about the loss of your system. :tears:

If you are concerned with the MCD201 why not just get the MVP871.

I know it costs more and may have some features you will not use but everyone here who has heard the MVP871 loves it. And you may grow into a system that uses all of the MVP871 features.

Since you are buying your systen all at once you will have some bargaining power. Here is what I would do: First work out a price for the C45, MCD201 and MC252. Then tell your dealer you are concerned with the MCD201 issues and ask for a guaranty that your new MCD201 will be dead quiet. Then I'm guessing the dealer will hesitate. Then say how about I just get the MVP871 instead for $1000 USD (convert to your currency) more. I bet your dealer will go for this deal, if not tell him you need to think about it for a few days.

My experience is that even if you get a "bad" 201, Chuck at McIntosh will be more than happy to send a replacement ASAP.

However, I guess that transport issues must have been resolved by now..

I will admit that the transport is more "noticible" than my previous player (a Rotel that also had a 4x drive - anyway, a 1x drive doesn't exist anymore).

I asked my dealer (who is almost a friend) and he told me that he got something like 3 out of 4 bad MCD201's in the early beginning (summer 2006), but not one problem since then.

Jim,

Hmmmmm. Mine was stickered with a date of January 07. Lock ups, noise etc. Not so sure it has been "fixed." Emailed a friend recently who got his unit in March 07 and he is on his 3rd 201. Just what I know.

I've never heard a bad thing about the MVP871. If you can swing it, it's likely the best way to go. I agree.

The MVP871 is $2200 CDN more than the MCD201. It's a little out of my price range, despite the fact it also plays HDCD disks properly. I'll probably get a Rotel CD changer for HDCD and background music eventually.
I'll see about a deal once he sorts out getting me replacement speakers. I'm getting Joseph Audio RM25XL's to replace my stolen RM25si's. The big problem is there isn't a Canadian dealer for them anymore, and the insurance adjuster is giving me some problems over the rate of exchange.
I'd rather get the MCD201 and save up for an MDA1000, then save a few more years for an MCD1000. Odd logic, but it gives me great sound and an upgrade path.

I'm sorry for you guys. I guess my dealer got lucky, but we are in a small city so he doesn't sell dozens of them.
