CD player - need it to "pop"!

FM was wonderful. In the 1970s and 80s, when they ironically were playing vinyl live to air. Even in the early 90s with CD as a source, a local station and a good tuner, it was amazing.
Then along came lots of highrises along the beach near me, lots of multipath/reflections, heavily compressed broadcasting and multiple re-encoded tracks that sound worse than the worst mp3. I haven't listened to FM except in the car, for over a decade.
I think it is the same all around the world these days.

I hate to tell you this but the problem isn't the gear. It is the source. I have an SX-737, had a 1010 new. The cart certainly does factor in some. However, if the vinyl itself was lame or poorly-mastered, a Pioneer of the x3x or x50 series will rub your nose in it. You can sometimes tweak the output, but you are limited to what you can pull from the source.
CD will not automatically solve your problems, either. There are a lot of early CDs that sound just plain awful. Record masters simply dumped onto disc with no adjustment are often to blame. Again, a just plain bad master will only sound even worse on digital.

I just purchased an Ortofon Blue cartridge. Very impressed. The Red can be had for $100. Might be well worth your investment. Had an old cheap AT I salvaged from an old TT I had as a temporary. Rode too high in the groove, previous record owners apparently had cheap cartridges. Played with the better one and most of the noise and crap went away.
Might consider a new phono stage as well. Not too familiar with the Pioneers since I haven't listened to one since they were new, but $100 tossed here can go a long was as well.
