Hello! I need some advice on my digital setup. Currently I have all my music in FLAC format on my PC. I have it running via toslink to my Denon receiver (AVR1804). I like the convenience of having all my music in one place, but I do want an upgrade in sound quality. Am I correct in thinking that an external DAC would be just as effective an upgrade as a mid-fi CD player? As far as I know, it's difficult to mess up ones and zeros. Secondly, would it be more advantageous to bypass the external DAC and just buy a different receiver? If I go the DAC route, I want to keep it in the $200 range, but if that's not going to get me the notable upgrade I'm looking for, I'll have to rethink things. Thank you!

Get a used Squeezebox classic for about $150. They sound as good alone as any $200 DAC. Save up for a better DAC later. Something like a Paradisea. I now have 5 Squeezeboxes. They have revolutionized my listening habits. Once it is up and running and you get used to the remote, it becomes very easy to access your tunes at a moments notice.
 
I'm listening to iTunes .WAV files off my desktop through my wireless netbook connected to a V-DAC right now and Al Green sure sounds sweet :thmbsp:
