I've just found myself the owner of a Yamaha CDC-845 that came with a rack full of vintage Sansui gear I acquired. I understand that they were the top model of the CDC series in the early/mid eighties.
Cosmetically it's in very good condition, performs exactly as it should and comes from a non-smoking, no pets household. Its (now rather old) German lady owner bought it brand new. It's rarely used but she has never had any problems with it. Even the manual is like new.
Questions
Is this considered a quality player by today's standards ?
Is the unit worth keeping as a daily player or would a modern unit be more suitable ?
Are they reliable ?
How do the lasers fail and will I probably be up for a new laser in the not to distant future ?
How easy is it to get parts for these units ?
Is the DAC any good, ie, is it better to use the RCA outputs or should I use the TOSLINK output via a good external DAC ?
I don't own any other Yamaha gear, other than a piano and a trumpet, so unlike vintage Sansui gear, I'm not a collector or hobbyist. I have little knowledge of high end CD players, I have a good CD collection but I tend to stream via Tidal.
What sort of money do they sell for ? Range ?
