Celestion Ditton 44 & Mengyue Mini 6P1

I am currently using some Celestion Ditton 44's that are being driven by a gainclone. When paired with the wrong amplifier the bass is dreadful (muddy and flabby). The driver seems un-controlled.

I am gasping to try a tube amplifier and I've seen the Mengyue Mini 6P1. I'm quite worried about the damping factor of tube amplifiers, the Mengyue has very little.

I'm a student so this amplifier represents a useful amount of money to me. The output power and sensitivity is no problem, do you guys think it's worth the risk?

Sorry I know it's quite a specific question I've asked; Basically, if I've used a transistor amplifier with a damping factor of 55 and I've gotten mushy, undefined bass with quite pronounced peaks, will using an amplifier with a lower damping factor generally make things worse or are there more variables? The amplifier was a NAD 3020a.

The sensitivity of the speakers are OK (88db/w) and playing the most demanding songs in my listening room at its peak I am using just over 1w of power from my current amplifier, so the headroom of the Mengyue is no problem.

The build quality of the amplifier doesn't bother me, I've restored loads of tube gear: PA's, radios, a tube tester. I'll be able to get it going if they've sent me a dud.

What are your experiences with large drivers and low damping factor?

get a better tube amp. even resto a consol pull, 6bq5 PP. much better than a meng. and less $.
I got one and it rocks on some 93dB sense. sansui spkrs, ported reflex.

Are these the amps that you can pull from things like radiograms and electric organs? I know of a dying HMV Stereomaster, seems like a plan.

60s tube stereo consols of all makes models, Magnavox is particularly good to do. but rca,ge, syl, mot, etc etc.

I'm not sure an HMV Stereomaster (7 wpc 15 ohm impedence) will be a good match for those 44s. 88 db/w is not very efficient for low wattage tube amps.

Alright I've been looking and it's still going to be a bit of a struggle getting a suitable console that's within a 50m radius. I think the best solution is to build something that will suit my needs. Doing this will allow me to buy components as I need. So no significant outlay.

I quite like the look of the Mullard 5-20 or the 5-10, the iron will be expensive but I already have all of the valves for both of the amplifiers, I can fab the chassis no problem. I think this is the best solution.
