Celestion SL-12 Speakers

I have a pair of Celestion SL-12 speakers with 4 damaged woofers. They use the same woofers as the SL-6--just twice as many. I understand that I won't be able to buy replacements from Celestion, and so far finding 4 used ones has proven to be futile.

I'm wondering whether someone has a solution. Are there any alternative woofers that will fit these beauties? It's unfortunate because these really are good quality, substantial speakers and I'd hate to see them in a dumpster.

What is wrong with the woofers that can't be repaired? Short of a burned VC most anything can be fixed and you could even fix that is you had to. Cone drivers are pretty simple things. If the surrounds (outer edge) are the only issue those are quite EZ to fix.

They were beginning to separate from the surrounds and someone tried to fix them with what appears to be a mixture of glue and nail polish. I just assumed they were not fixable. I will look into that now though. Thank you!
 
Start with the specs, and then try many of the driver sellers on the web for a match:

Frequency response: - 3dB at 70Hz, - 6dB at 58Hz
Drive units: two 165mm bass, 32mm tweeter
Sensitivity: 86dB SPL at I metre for I Watt
Power handling: up to 150 Watts programme
Nominal impedance: 8 ohms
Amplifier requirements: 25-150 Watts
Crossover frequencies: 05 and 28kHz
 
Celestion had those woofers a year ago? They were pricey though....The surround size is not made by anyone I could find. You might want to try to seam the surrounds with the closest size up they are rubber and can be done........And yes they are nice speakers.
 
Having had several pairs of this line, I can state that all of them were good to very good speakers. It's going to be difficult if not impossible to replace those surrounds with duplicates, and it appears that they have been mucked up beyond repair. You may have to find some conventional rubber surrounds that will fit. Whether or not they will change the resonance characteristics of the drivers is a crap shoot, but it may be your only option.
 
There's a guy selling a pair on ebay right now, but there a little pricey. and there is
somebody here in the states that does redo them in rubber surround I would not use
foam rubber on those it might change the sound.

Late Celestion SL speakers have a two-part surround that separates. (This is not a problem with the SL-6 and SL-600, which have a simple rubber surround). The separated surrounds can be reglued easily enough, altho if it's not done carefully it can look ugly. Since you can't get replacement SL woofers in any event, you have nothing to lose by regluing. I've done it and can detect no apparent sonic penalty.
