Cerwin Vega 211R & 217R

Just grabbed pairs of Cerwin Vega 217R & 211R & the seller even delivered them to me! I read the 217R's are the "little brother" of the 15T's which I'm also fortunate to own. And that is a fact. The 217R has the same 15" 153W woofer as well as the same rear firing horn. The mid & the tweeter I'm not sure about. It may be the same tweeter but definitely a different mid because the 15t's have an 8" mid. The cabinets on the 217R's need some tlc & I'll definitely give the 15" woofers a recone. I reconed the 15" woofers on my 15t's and they turned out amazing! I'm going to swap the reconed 15's from the 15t's to the 217r's so I can test them. The crossovers will probably need going over too. The 211R cabinets are in a little better shape then the 217r's and the rear horn and tweeters appear to be in perfect shape. The foam is shot on both 12" woofers just as the foam on the 15's I'll most likely recone all 4 woofers, my speaker repair guy doesn't like to refoam 40+ year old speakers & I get it. He uses far superior material for the cones (a type of treated cloth I believe) and I really liked the results from the work he did on the 15t's. I could provably get away with just refoaming all 4 but being they are anywhere from 41 to 45 years old I'll probably recone them. Does anyone think that's a bad move? Is it better to keep the original cones and just add new foam? The only disappointment was the 211R's are missing the grilles.. I knew about the foam from the pictures but wasn't aware of the missing grilles until the guy showed up. But I wasn't upset because I got an extremely good deal. Not to mention the fact the guy delivered them to my front door! Anyone else out there own either the 217r's or 211r's? I'm guessing finding replacemt grilles for the 211r's will probably never happen but fortunately they look pretty sweet without them! Definitely happy with my purchase and lucky to own not only the 15T's but the little bro 217r and his little bro the 211r's! I have to say today was a good day.. I posted some pics of the 217r's will post the 211r's later!

I like the original cones color.
Beyond that.....if the new cones are Superior and the voice coil ...go with a completely new rebuild in the original baskes and Magnets
 
I owned the 217r's for a while. I must say they were a really good speaker. Loud as a train too! Placement is critical. Somewhere on the web is a guide as to placement against a wall, or in a corner of a room. If they weren't so damn big and heavy, I would still own them. Do not replace the surrounds with the pink surrounds, keep them gray as originally manufactured, (shim the voice coils, and a dust cap is available, but it will be slightly larger). 2 caps in each cross over.
 
Is that an 11.2 surround sound setup!?! I'm guessing it sounds pretty damn good! What kind of amp/receiver are you using to power all those bad boys?

I have a really good speaker restoration guy who does the work for me. I know he can use the existing dust cap if I ask him too. as far as the surrounds go will any black 15" surrounds work or do they have to be specific to this model? Usually only see the red/pink ones for sale online.. I'd definitely like to keep them as "original" as possible. I had the 15ts reconed and they look like new CV's with the red surrounds and CV logo dust caps. They look great but aren't visible being they are downfiring
 
I used the gray surrounds, (personal preference), but I used a standard black dust cap to keep original. These are not like newer CV's. Another thing, they benefit from the use of an EQ.
 
Wow, you are really lucky to find a pair of 217R's. A rare find. I also have a pair of 211R's, which I purchased brand new in January 1977. I still have them and they still sound great. I just recapped the crossovers last year. It was probably way past time. I only wish I would have also bought a pair of the 217R's at the time. The 211R's originally came with a foam speaker grill that attached to the Velcro. When my roommates dog at the time chewed them up, I ordered another pair of grills from Cerwin Vega and they sent me a grill with a frame, which was wrapped in black grill cloth. If you would like, I could shoot some pics of the grills. The frame looks pretty simple to make. I just purchased some grill cloth from Simply Speakers to redo mine, but haven't done it yet. Also, here's a brochure I found online years ago with all the specs. and info on this line of Vega's, the 24, 26, 211, 211R, and the 217R. It prints out really nicely. Hope it helps. Wow! Thanks a lot for this info! I really appreciate it! If you could send those pics of the Grille that would be awesome. The Velcro is all intact so I was planning on making some grilles. Those pictures would be a great help. I'm planning on getting some thin strips of wood to make them with. I've purchased CV diaphragms in the past from simply Speakers, great site! I'm excited to hear the 211r's I removed the 12" woofers and will be taking them to be refoamed soon. I have a pair of CV 15t's that have the same 15" woofers as the 217r's it's the 153W. I took those woofers out of the 15t's and installed them in the 217r's, they sound amazing! I can't believe how efficient these speakers are, they were advertised to be able to produce good sound with 3watts! It's no gimmick! I've tested them with a 10Watt tube amp and they sounded great, I've also ran them with 50Watts, 100Watts and 125Watts. They are currently being powered with a 125WPC Technics SU-V9 integrated amp along with a Luxman C-1010 preamp and Technics SH-8055 Equalizer. They sound fantastic! To get the most out of them they need to be placed at least 6" from the wall because of the rear firing horn. I've also realized if they are on a stand it makes them sound better as well. The bass is really impressive! The mids and highs are good but not as impressive as the low end. The preamp & Eq defintelty help get the best out of them. The 217R's are definitely keepers! I had a hell of a time removing the woofers though! A couple of the nuts were seized but after a couple days of blood, sweat and tears I got them off. Luckily there was no problem with removing the 211r woofers. I tested the horn, tweeter and crossover of the 211r's and everything is working great! I'm going to run all 4 speakers after I get them refoamed. I'll stack the 211r's on top of the 217r's and have a nice CV wall of sound! I've been a fan of 70's CV speakers since I purchased the 15T's a few years ago. I'm lucky to have in my opinion 3 of the best CV speakers from this era. Some say the 217R's are the little brother to the 15T and the 211R's are the little brother of the 217R's so I have the whole family! I've gotten an offer on the 15t's though so it may be time to let them go. It's a solid offer and I have so many speakers I need to start thinning the herd. If you notice, looking at it from the front, the edges are cut at a angle. For cosmetic only, but it looks good. I've also included a couple of pics of my 211R's. I don't know which ones you have. Mine are the later design. Sometime in 1976 they changed the design up at bit on how the woofer and front tweeter mount. At the same time they changed the outside appearance of the crossover. My speakers were made in December 1976. I think, but not sure, that 1977 was the last year they made this line of Vega's. The 15T's you mentioned was just another line of Vega's. Later on in the early 1990's the VS line came out. I'm trying to come across a pair of the VS150's and a pair of the VS120"s. 15" and 12" woofers. I have never actually listened to either, but the research and articles I have read makes them sound awesome. Even though it is over 12 years old, my newest receiver that I have is the Yamaha RX-V2600. But I still have the receiver I purchased at the same time I bought my 211R's. The Sansui 9090DB, 125 watts RMS. I still play it a lot, mainly in stereo/music. I hope this helps. The 15T/TR and 12T/R are brothers and cousins of the 211R- 217/R. They're all built in CV's golden era (quality cabinets and drivers).

Grey foams were the factory choice although hard to find sometimes and if the cones haven't soften over the years I'd just refoam. Man, I'm excited about your purchase and if it's anything I can do to help let me know.

Gray foam for these isn't hard to find. If the cone has softened, give it a light, even coat of ModPodge and it will re-bind the fibers. Once it dries, you won't even know it's there.
 
I have a pair of CV 211r that I bought new in 1974 that I am now ready to part with due to downsizing of my home. Cabinets are in great shape (got photos). Bass speakers were refoamed about 10 years ago. The crossovers died about 3 years ago, and I replaced them with new ones purchased from Simply Speakers - I was amazed how well that worked out as the speakers sounded like brand new. If anyone is interested, they are available.

Even though those look like PA type speakers they are actually home stereo speakers and would be perfect for surround sound..
I am now using 4 D9's on one of my surround sound not pictured, I'm a firm believer in having 12 inch or 15 in woofers all the way around for surround sound set ups and even in the center Channel.. and having twin subwoofers are a must but believe it or not with the right subwoofers 10 inch woofers or bigger are just fine.

I think Best Buy in the United States also has that line of Cerwin Vega that you put a link to shop around for the best price and make sure you get from a place that will honor their shipping policies in case they come to you broken by the shipping company!

Cerwin Vegas PA speakers are completely different line that can be seen at the Cerwin Vega. Com
