Cerwin Vega D-5 tweeter alternative

Hey! My tweeters does not sound well anymore and i need a new pair of tweeters for my Cerwin Vega D-5.

I am not able to find original replacement tweeters or the MG BT-2 tweeters in the European Union. It is crucial that the speakers are sent from europe - i cant wait for the delivery from USA.

Anyone know a good alternative tweeter for the CV D-5's?

Thanks

If the tweeters are still functioning, it is likely that you need to replace the caps in the crossover, rather than the drivers themselves. Pop out the crossovers, read the values and grab a couple new caps.

@savatage1973
What caps are you talking about? and what are the crossovers?
How do i change these?

Do you own a digital multimeter? If so set it to measure resistance (the ohm signal) and measure the resistance of the tweeters by putting the red probe on the positive terminal and the black probe on the negative. Let us know what it reads. If you don't own one, go buy one as they're cheap and good to have around.

Also if you don't have a multimeter then I doubt you'll have anything to measure capacitance so forget the crossover for now unless there is a resistor in the tweeters circuit then you could measure that. If you take out the terminal plate from the back of the speaker or remove the woofer from the front you should be able to see the crossover. From the front it may be buried under some acoustic insulation of some kind. It will have a bunch of small components that all of the driver wires come from, capacitors, resistors, and inductors (or coils as they're called).

Hey @saabracer23 I measured the tweeters resistance with an analog multimeter. It made a scratchy sound in the tweeters and the needle bounced from 10-20 ohm before settling on about 9 ohm.

Here is a picture of the crossover: http://imgur.com/mdo1MKR
I guess it is the three yellow things that are the capacitors?

It sounds like you're using an analog dmm. If it measures at 9 ohms it should be ok. I'm thinking it may be your potentiometers. The silver things on the crossover with knobs that urn on the back. They get corrosion build up and stop continuity. Try turning them their full amount back and forth several times to try and clean them up and then try it.

The caps would be those yellow things on the crossover panel. The values should be printed on them.

As mentioned above, cleaning the pots could also the issue--buy a can of DeOxit D5 contact cleaner, spray it into them and work them back and forth. It is readily available at any Guitar Center store or on Amazon. Don't know what other retailers you might have locally to source the stuff.

Haha I said analog dmm, oxymoron as in I'm the moron. Good call on the deoxit savatage1973. Using some of that will work much better than without.
