I bought a pair of Cerwin Vega D7E a few weeks ago. These are my first pair, and believe it or not, I have never heard a pair before!
The woofer surrounds were toast, the grill fabric was in rough shape, with one dust cover on a woofer pushed in. Aside from that, they were in good condition. However, when I removed the woofer for refoaming, I noticed some loose wires inside. Hmmm, does this mean someone was inside these? I wondered what I would find. I got the woofers back yesterday, and decided to check out the connections.
First step, find a schematic. No luck there, but I did find a schematic for the D9s, and since they are in a similar configuration, I figured they would do. I removed the control panel, where the crossover resides, and I find three black wires loose, a red wire loose, but everything else is connected, although some of those plugs are a little loose. A red and a black wire are for the woofers. Each of the mids have a yellow wire to them, but no black. Ok, that explains where the loose wires go. I checked out the easiest mid to reach, and I measure 7+ ohms. About right. So maybe nobody was in there, or they didn’t like the mods, and the black wires just came off with time? Not likely the latter, because the other speaker is the same. I will need to investigate this further.
So, upon further inspection, I discovered that the most likely reason the wires were disconnected is because the wire terminals that connect into the drivers were loose. While attempting to tighten these, they snapped off on one wing. So I’ve put them in place temporarily to make sure everything else is good. I’ll go to Home Depot and buy a terminal kit from them. Now to try them out!
I decided to start them on my Kenwood KA-8006 integrated, mainly because it was already set up on the dining room table. Put on Tori Amos, from the choirgirl hotel, and holy crap! Do they ever sound good! Waited for my wife to come upstairs and told her to listen. Same response! These sound really good!
I picked up the kit later on this afternoon, and stopped at the fabric store for some new fabric for the grills, and they were closed. Tomorrow.
