Cerwin Vega Midrange Problem

jjohnson

Super Member
I just purchased a pair of Cerwin Vega E-312 speakers tonight and got them home to find that one of the midranges is blown. I was unable to hear them before I picked them up and now the seller is unwilling to listen to the idea of a return even though I was assured that they were perfectly functioning speakers.:thumbsdn: I guess that I'll never learn.

At any rate, I need to find a replacement driver. All that I can tell from the driver is that it is 8 ohm and made in the Phillipines. Is there anyone that can point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

Thanks for the response. I'm looking as hard as I can but can't find one that looks quite like this.

have you checked to ensure that the mid is indeed blown? the 312's use a switch to control the mid level. if the switch is dirty and not making contact, the mid will not play. check the mid with a multimeter.

Nice find! watd u pay for them? BTW Emailing CV is your best bet. The E series is pretty new so replacement parts should be avalable.

That was a thought but I just drug out the multimeter and the driver is dead. Interestingly enough, the midrange driver in the other speaker, which is supposedly 8 ohms, measured 5.2 ohms.

Thanks. I paid $80 for the pair. I thought that I had gotten a really good deal until I hooked them up.:sigh:

That's not unusual.

8 ohms is the nominal impedance. What you measured is DC resistance and that is almost always, if not always, lower than the impedance spec.

If it was a 4 ohm driver, what you measured would be something less than 4 ohms.

Sooo....you didn't get to hear them before picking them up? 80 bones is quite an ante for a chance something might not be working. Now, $20 or so, nothing major. Good luck on the driver search!

Even with the broken mid that's a good deal. I like the sound of the E series. One of the more versatile CV's That are good for more than metal and rock:rockon: You could just stick in a mid from a another CV model cuz most are the same size. Just match the ohmage and the size. BTW did you check parts express? they have some mids that would maybe work

Damn! It's not enough that my wife thinks I'm a dumbass.:D She chastised me about it the same as you. I've always been a bit too trusting. Usually I come out ahead. You takes your chances, you gets what you gets.

On another note, I was in Denton a few years ago. I attended a series of confernces at Texas Women's University. I don't remember much except for a restaurnant where they cut your tie off. Great food though.

I have an email into them. I'll call tomorrow to follow up. It just looks like a 5 1/4" woofer. I want to get their recommendation and I would buy two to get a matching pair.

Been there! Trail Dust....a steak place on 380 going towards McKinney. The first time I ever went there when I moved here back in 2003, someone told me to wear a crappy tie and see what happens. Interesting concept. :scratch2: :D

Good news. I spoke with Cerwin Vega technical support and they had the midrange in stock. Shipped to me for $40. I should have it in about a week.

Excellent Customer Service

I received a brand new midrange via FedEx this afternoon. It was only Tuesday afternoon when I placed my order. The driver is in and sounding fine.
