I found a pair of these in a dumpster. The foam surrounds on the woofers are shot.

I can put a new pair of woofers into the cabinets, and the mids and tweeters look okay. Before I do that though, I was wondering what the specs are for these speakers. I'm guessing they were made sometime during the 80's, but I don't know for sure.

These speakers look very high end. They have front mounted controls for the mids and tweeters, the boxes are very sturdily built and very heavy, and the woofers themselves have huge magnets on them.

Why put new woofers in them?

For under $20, a bottle of glue, and a small amount of time, you can re-foam these.

Kits are readily available on the net, eBay, and even possibly here, through members ReEdger and Gordon.
 
Just replace the foam surrounds, go to http://www.wooferrepair.com/vega.html for the correct red surrounds and dust cap. I bought the 8" version for my Cerwin AT-8's from them. The kit comes with an instructional DVD which walks you step by step how to replace the foam.

I would re foam them, but their last owner BADLY damaged the cone on one of the woofers. It's unfixable. Sorry for not mentioning that before.

Here's another interesting issue:

I hooked the speakers up to my receiver to test the mids and tweeters. They sound fine, but I can barely hear them on one of the boxes. Playing with the knobs on the crossover has no effect on either box.
 
Hard to say. I guess I'd take them apart and see if someone has been messing around inside. I have D-9s and the pots need occasional cleaning.

They're not an extremely high-end speaker with pinpoint imaging and fabulous detail, but if you like a loud rock-and-roll type speaker they'll certainly do the trick and sound OK doing it.

Someone can recone the speakers too. Cerwin may even offer the service. Just depends on how much you want to spend on them. However, without the Cerwin woofers, they may not be the same high sensitivity design. The D-7 is rated at 98dB/1w/1m.

FWIW, I can tell you that on 2-26-1986 my pair of D-9 set me back $741.75 (including tax) because I still have the receipt (and maybe the boxes too).
 
What damage to the woofer? Many boo boos can be fixed with glue and resourcefulness. And CV drivers are probably differently speced than generic drivers. The difference in performance between the CV and Radio Shack or whatever is possibly greater than the original and your repaired version.
 
The woofer with the damaged cone, the damage is so extensive that I think the voice coil is damaged as well. :(

Cleaning the pots seems to have helped balance out the mids.

I have no money to spend on refoaming/reconing (hence why I'm grabbing speakers out of a dumpster), but I have a pair of 12's that I am going to stick in there and see how they sound.

The cabinets are in better shape then my Sony SS-U870's, so I might keep them if they sound good enough.
 
Whatever you do, don't throw out the damaged woofers. Keep them around until you can afford to fix them.
 
I may give the damaged woofers to somebody who can invest the time and energy into properly restoring them. I'm not sure yet.
 
I can recone those CV woofers. We're a "factory" repair facility (ie, if you call Cerwin-Vega and are in this area, they'll recommend us as the preferred repair facility) for those.

I'd take it too if I had the money. Failing that, I'll do what I can with what I have.

Perhaps in time, I'll either have the originals refoamed/reconed, or just purchase duplicates off of eBay or a similar place.
 
I've dealt with Gordon. Honest, courteous, and skilled.

I've got better than fair deals with him.

Swap the 12" drivers you got for now, and save a bit to re-cone that damaged one and some foam, if the rest of the drivers work.

hopefully the previous owner didn't fry the rest of the drivers too.

check the wiring, the caps, ect.

Well, I put some 12's from a pair of Sony SS-U870's in the Cerwin Vega cabinets, and with a few adjustments to my equalizers, they actually sound pretty damn good. They look pretty good also. The black woofer matches the black midranges and tweeters.

At my current rate, after I take care of my higher priorities, I should be able to save up to have the Cerwin Vega woofers reconed sometime in...2028...

I may just give them to somebody who can recone/refoam them and use them for their needs.
 
Those are easy to get parts for and not an expensive re-cone. I'm sure Gordon wouldn't beat you up too bad on those. Where are you located?
 
Too far to even pay for the shipping.

Persistance is one thing, but seriously, enough please. They aren't getting reconed any time soon, if ever. I now know what I have, and I have them working good enough for the time being.
