I use a SW12-B passive subwoofer. I'm currently running the connection from the receiver output to the sub, then from the sub output to my speakers.

would it make any difference if I ran a connection from the receiver to the sub, and another set of speaker wires from the same receiver output directly to the speakers? (which happen to be Sansui SP-2000's)

You impedance to the receiver may drop below safe levels. Usually, the sub has a crossover built-in, to choke off the lowest frequencies from the mains, while maintaining the load.
