I need some advice from the speaker builders here.
I have reacquired my old pair of Cerwin Vega VS-120 speakers and they need some major work.
The cabinets (boxes) are trashed and will need rebuilding. The 12" drivers both need tinsel lead replacement and refoam, neither of which is really a big deal.
Both of the midrange drivers have torn surrounds and although they work, they would need either repair or replacement. The tweeters are ok.
My question is since the midrange drivers tend to be muddy with vocals, piano, and the like. And the tweeters are a little harsh and very "forward" and since I'm rebuilding the boxes anyway and as such not limited to factory speaker cutouts, what should I do?
My idea is to upgrade the midrange and tweeters with a better quality drivers in either a TMW or MTMW configuration to improve the overall performance of these.
I plan on using the original crossover, but if there is a better way I'm open to that as well.
Help me make these sing because I love the look, how they handle rock (my primary music choice) the efficiency, and the smoothness of the bass.
I've considered drivers from Eminence, Peerless, and Dayton in 4", 6", and 8" as well as soft dome or silk tweeters for their overall smoothness.
