Champagne Engraved 2230 Question

With the champagne engraved Marantz 2230, was that just for low serial numbers, and if so, how high did it go? Someone has one locally that appears to be engraved but the serial is 51794, and I didn't realize they went that high.

My understanding is that it was only early serial numbers - likely only 5000. Possibly the Champaign faceplate has been swapped to this unit.
