Check out the so-called second state butcher cover on the GW site.

Well at the price it is at, I cant believe any informed record collector would bid that much without knowing and with those pictures. makes me wonder if GW doesnt have shill bidders.

I love Goodwill stores, but I gave up on their auction site due to their insistence that everything be sent USPS. I once ordered a book, and they wouldn't even send it media mail - it had to go first class.

I don't understand how someone can be bidding that high with no description. There's a decent one or two at a local vinyl store for $15 each.

I cannot detect a trace of bleed-through from Ringo's shirt. I've seen another "pasted" cover like that, locally, and spent a LONG time staring at it under different lights, with a sort of now-you-see-it, now-you-don't feeling about whether that spot was there. Finally was able to compare it with a real paste-over, and there wasn't much doubt: whatever was barely showing through was NOT Ringo's famous shirt triangle. Also, it was in a slightly different location, as Tarl of Gor says.

The description of this one says, "Below is a picture of the area of the front cover slick to the left of Ringo's left elbow. In that area, approximately beneath the "od" in "Today" there is a faint shadow visible in certain lights. This could be the black collar Ringo is wearing in the butcher picture showing through the slick, but seller can't be cerain. As with many copies of the album, because of the yellowing of the non-archival slick from age, it is difficult to discern with certainty. "

That sounds exactly how I felt about the one that I found -- I kept going back to re-check, hoping I'd found one of the rare, special ones. Eventually I accepted that there WERE pasted-on covers of this LP released that otherwise look like the (in)famous butcher paste-overs, but AFTER the relatively few that actually had the "butcher" cover underneath, and that was what I found in the store. The chances of finding on of these is much higher than the chances of finding a genuine "second state" one.

I think the one in this sale is for one of those more-common pasted-on but not pasted-over ones, too.

I can't believe anyone would pay that much for something in that condition, or if there were any question as to authenticity. :screwy:

There are $15 butcher covers at your local shop? Would you pick up one or both for me?

Doesn't appear to be one to me but they are claiming it is and even admit that it hasn't been authenticated.

Well, they see to be upfront about it and are admitting it might not be what they claim it to be..

"Please note that we are not able to have the sleeve professionally authenticated. This listing represents our best good faith effort to physically describe the item and respond to requests for additional information, but we can't say for certain it is a paste-over butcher copy. Please note the matrix numbers posted above and bid accordingly. If you require a bid retraction, please feel free to email the seller."

I think they've done their job in making bidders aware that it may NOT be a butcher cover. Nobody is holding a gun to any bidder's head here...

I'm guessing they discontinued shipping the original cover design due to negative reaction to the content.
I'm also guessing someone came up with the idea of putting a giant sticker over the original cover instead of manufacturing new ones. Limited to the amount already produced,it created a Beatles oddity / collectible.

Although they just revised the listing today, I think they should end the auction and relist it describing it for what it is, not what it isn't. THEN, let the bidders beware.

If you dig online, that's pretty much the case and there's all sort of valuations on the various items, originals, paste overs, paste overs pulled off, you name it...
