Checking audio quality for my internet radio station

Full disclosure: I created on online radio station named Fort Dodge Radio last April, and have been a AK'er since 2015.

I would appreciate your feedback on our station's audio quality if you have a streamer and regularly listen with headphones.

When I created the station last April, I found that I had to process each file individually to get the levels to match each other. I added compression knowing that our listeners would most likely be listening from their computer desktops or with headphones. Compression is also helpful when I've listened via my smartphone and bluetooth connection in the car.

I used my Sennheiser HD-580's as a reference for the audio. I've also used my Koss Porta-Pro and AKG-Q701's headphones as testers. Sources I've used to test include my computer desktop speakers, iPad, iPod, and an Ocean Digital WR-26 portable receiver.

What I don't have is access to all the other makes/models of streamers and other makes/models of headphones other than what I presently own. My thought was that the Sennheiser HD-580's were the best way to go for an audio quality reference, but the Koss and AKG's sound very good too.

If you could help me with a quick audio test on your equipment, I'd appreciate knowing what type of streamer and headphone make/model that you used. Please let me know if you had any difficulty accessing our stream with your equipment.

BTW, because of music licensing restrictions, you can only access our stream in the U.S., Canada, and U.K.

I keep seeing this thread pop up, 9re)read, then wanna go and test your stream, but then i come to the line that states "BTW, because of music licensing restrictions, you can only access our stream in the U.S., Canada, and U.K." Remembering that I am in France, that's where it all ends, every time. Otherwise I'd have been happy to test it out and send (user) comments back to ya.

One of my favorite combos for listening to Internet radio: Ocean Digital WR-26, FiiO Mont Blanc, AKG Q701.

I'm listening to your station as I type this. I think it sounds very good. I'm listening through my Logitech Media Server streamed to a Raspberry Pi running Squeezelite. I'm listening through speakers. See my Sig.

I am now listening on a pair of Grado SR-60 HPs. LMS > Raspberry Pi > Tube Audio Design TAD-150 pre > Grado SR-60. Nice SQ and the songs seem be at the same level. I like your music selection BTW.

Hey, as we've already discussed I cannot help in the "test" b/c I am in EU Zone, buta question: Is setting up a streaming radio service very (technically) difficult? Can you breifly describe the tech elements, both hard/soft "wares" that are involved in establishing and maintaining such a service? I'm sorta interested in starting up s.t. over here, to stream "good" Metal, American BLUES, and the terrabytes of "unofficial live" recordings (i.e., ROIOs) I've collected over the last couple of decades.

i am trying to get a station online but struggling with the ports . i can connect fine on local network but not able to stream over the internet .if you can give me any pointers it would be appreciated .

Sure...I'd be happy to help.

First off, the easiest way to start a station is to go with a service such as Live365.com or Radio.co. They are good places to start if you've never done it before because they have the software, streaming, and music licenses that you need to cover any copyrighted materials on your station. Plus, Live365.com gives you a free trial period for you to test everything out (I think it's a week) which was important to me before I signed up for their service.

Here's a quick list of equipment/software. I'll add what I use in parenthesis:

1) Microphone (Sennheiser MD 46)
2) Headphones (Sennheiser HD-580)
3) Digital Audio Recorder for ID's, Promos, etc (Tascam DR-2d)
4) Audio editing software (Audisk)
5) USB board for live mixing of audio (Alesis Multimix 8)

Skills and basic knowledge:

1) Audio editing skills (for music tracks, ID's, promos, etc)
2) Announcing/presentation skills
3) Music Licensing basics (what copyrighted music you can and cannot use)

Optional and helpful:
1) Social media and promotion skills
2) Website building skills to build a basic home page for your station

I won't go into much detail into the "how" I put it all together...but if you have a specific question I'll try to answer it. We also do a podcast for one of our weekend programs too, which I think is a nice compliment to the streaming side.

Gosh Bill, I guess that about covers it for sure! Since I'd be more of a circa late night "college station" type deej, I'd likely go sorta light on the social media and promotion skills and the announcing/presentation skills, but I had sure not thought (til now) about the importance of music editing/mixing activities, skills which I have, albeit in my case via Audacity. Thanks for the fairly detailed (and well organized) reply; this is definitely food for (further) thought.
 
FYI during the Wayne Brady commercial when the woman's voice comes on at the end her voice breaks up with a staticy sound. I have heard it twice now.

Listening on Grado SR-60s hooked into a Fisher 400. Everything else sounds good.

Edit: Also it would be nice if pictures of the band or the album the song comes from would show up on Logitech Media Server like it does on Paradise Radio, Spotify, etc.

Overall I say well done with your project!!
