Chicagoland Repair Shops

Greetings,

Can anyone recommend a reputable repair shop in the Chicagoland area that would be able to work on a Technics RS-1500 Reel-To-Reel machine?

Thanks,
Dan

In the past I had good luck getting a Pioneer CD player repaired at Skokie TV repair in Wheeling. Its on Milwaukee Ave, about 2 blocks south of Dundee Road. At the time they were an authorized Pioneer service center. Maybe someone still works on vintage gear like RTR decks over there.

Otherwise, chime in on the turntable, tape deck forum area. We got some experts technicians floating around here if your up for shipping it to them.

Deltronics rank very high in my humble opinion,,two locations One in metro Chicago 2911 north halsted,, one in Woodridge on 75th

There is a place in Chicago called The 20th Century TV & Stereo Center 1615 W Montrose. It has been in business since 1970. They have been featured in the Chicago Sun Times. Polish immigrants run the store/repair shop.

I would call Van L Speakerworks on Western Ave in Chicago. I've had some speakers repaired there and his store/shop is full of vintage gear for repair. I received fast competent work at a very fair price.

BTW I see you are in Elmhurst. Do NOT bring anything to that small TV repair place across the train stop in Elmhurst. (forgot the name, but it's on the same block as a driver's liscense renewal office) I brought a Pioneer SA-9500 there 5 years ago. They gave me an estimate of $150 (no problem) and 15-30 days for repair. (again, fair). FOUR MONTHS later they still hadn't even attempted the work, and the owner started yelling at me when I came by to get it regardless. In fact it was at his house the whole time! The girl working there apologized profusely to me, I paid a $75 "repair" bll and took it home. It worked for about a week before sold it cheap.

What about Decibel? I have a CA-1010 and a CA-2010 that both need a tune up. Do they do good work? I hope so because I have credit there.

Thanks. :music:

You might want to try AK member markthefixer. His specialty is Pioneer but he may be able to help you guys out.

I had my Pioneer 704 laserdisc player fixed at a Chinese owned electronics shop on Sheridan a block north of Argyle, east side of the street. Guy did good work.

As a follow-up, I ended up taking the unit to Van L Speakerworks, in Chicago, as he gave me a price quote of about $75 over the phone.

FANTASTIC WORK! Not to mention I was VERY impressed at his main products, too. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone else.

Regarding Deltronics...

I recently took my Yamaha CA-2010 there for repairs. When I picked it up they had damaged the beautiful cabinet. I think they dropped it while they had it apart. When I pointed this out they denied doing it. I took it home and the electronic "fix" unfixed itself hours later so I had to bring it back to them. This is where is gets ridiculous... I picked it up and it had been damaged AGAIN! A big chunk of veneer had been chipped out of the side. I couldn't believe it. And in order to right this wrong, they had (without my permission) put some wood putty in the places where they had smashed or chipped the veneer. It looked laughably bad so I asked for some money to have proper repairs made, but I've gotten nothing but frustration. He told me "sometimes these things happen". Steer clear of these guys.

I'm so pissed...

Thanks for posting this. I was going to take my ARC preamp there to be checked out, but now will look elsewhere. That is just bad business...and as the owner of a CA 1010, I can't imagine anything happening to that beautiful cabinet.

AK member Markthefixer (just elected AK member of the year) does fantastic work at a fair price too. He's a great guy as well. He's in Bensenville.
