chicks' Goodwill Systems

My main system has been through so many incarnations since joining AK, it's ridiculous. I had never seen the inside of a thrift store before AK, now I stop by nearly every day on the way home from work. It's been quite a ride. Been through lots of nice Pioneer, Marantz, NAD, Sansui, Avid, Advent, SAE, Sony, Technics, etc. gear.

My pride and joy, the JVC QL-A75 TT, from a CL seller. The price was so good, I pretended to be sick and took a half day off work to drive an hour for the pickup.

The current main system. The Pioneer A-80 integrated wasn't working when purchased from the GW, turned out that the speaker terminals had separated from the PC board, an easy fix after some head-scratching. The matching F-90 tuna was found a month or so later at the same GW, in perfect working condition.

The DCM TF-350's were also from the same GW, just needed the surrounds replaced, grilles and oak caps are excellent.

The OmniFi DMS-1 streamer was a $5 clearance item at Tuesday Morning, works via WiFi with the music server in the garage.

The LPs are mostly thrift store finds, and mostly Jazz. Have spent far more on LPs than on the system.

The garage system. A nice little GW Aiwa compact system, 60Wpc with toroidal power tranny, Boston Acoustics CR-6's painted blue & nickel (they were ugly brown when I found them at the SA). Topped by the Sony wonder tuna, bought at an excellent sale price from Fry's.

The music server is a $4 GW thin client with 1TB drive from Fry's. Another OmniFi DMS-1 streamer as a source from the music server and internet radio.

The office system. I use the unseen PC to rip CDs to the garage music server, and monitor the progress via the Freecom MusicPal (over WiFi) through the Edirol MA-15 monitors. The Edirol's also serve as computer speakers through a Toslink optical cable.

Miscellaneous items, no place to put 'em:

Seriously considering putting the AR amp in place of the Pioneer A-80. Currently working on a barter deal to have a case built for it

A nearly cosmetically perfect HK-930, with original box:

A nice $4 Dual 1019, currently with a Grado black, but no place to play:

Lots more stuff, cleaned up and fixed, waiting to list on CL or BT...

Gone but not forgotten:

These were $10 each. Funded a LOT of LPs when sold on CL:

Marantz Imperial 7's looked a lot better than they sounded:

You have and have had a bunch of nice gear. I had a pair of KLH AV5001's but my wife made me get rid of them because of their size. I was young and a newlywed so I agreed. I have been searching eBay and Craigslist for a pair for about 6 months now. The one pair I found went quicker than I could respond to the listing... They were only asking $50 for them...

Very nice Chicks! You must have a lot room . . . or used to have a lot lol! Sweet set-up!! :thmbsp:

Forgot the $10 AR-2a's, hooked up to SWMBO's craptastic Sony rack system in the living room. They cleaned up nicely:

Was really tempted to keep the Polk Monitor 10a's, they sounded great, but just a bit too big:

Chicks -

So what price rules do you set for yourself? Just eyeballing the gear you have, it looks to me like you'd pay much, much, much more on ebay or with a smart CL'er.

I guess what I've noticed is that ebay tends to set the default price across the country, and bargains are much harder to come by.

Also: if it's not an intrusion, how much of your life do you devote to finding, fixing, setting up gear, buying lps, etc.? I'm always interested in how people strike a balance between this stuff, which I find very easy to obsess about, and everything else.

If I can't at least triple my money, I usually pass, unless it's something that will quickly sell, especially here on Barter Town. It's pretty easy to check prices in the field with a cell phone. All the stuff I've kept has been paid for many times over by the resold stuff. Most of the profits go into LPs/CDs, so I have zero guilt about having lots of them. The music is the only real obsession, the gear is (almost) all temporary.

Probably spend 1/2 hour a day searching for gear and LPs, on the way home from work, mostly, so no extra gas used. Most of the "fixing" is simply cleaning the controls and cosmetic cleaning. Once in a while something will need to really be fixed, like the Pioneer A-80 and the HK-930, but I'm a former Electronics Tech, so enjoy fixing as part of the hobby.
