Christmas season limiting Pro-Ject availability??

Apparently, I've picked the WRONG time to try to but a turntable.

My birthday is this month, so I "asked" for a turntable from the family. With my budget of $500, I started researching and ended up at the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evolution. Unfortunately, the Christmas season seems to have knocked out the stock EVERYWHERE. I have been able to find red, yellow, and glossy white - non of which come anywhere close to matching my family room.

Does anybody know of any mom and pop type shops that might ship, or any stores near Chicago that might have stock? I really want the Walnut color.

And, if anybody wants to talk me out of the DC Evo, have at it!!

You should state if you are interested in used turntables or not.
Do you think you might want to change cartridges yourself?

I have a Pro-Ject table and changing cartridges was an eye-opener!

Certainly open to used and/or vintage...but one of the reasons I liked the Evo is that it comes with a decent cartridge - and it also allows "easier" stylus upgrades down the road (both Moonstone and Olympia have the same cartridge, I believe).
 
Even if you buy a vintage turntable or an alternative new model, you don't have to use the supplied cartridge - you can fit a cartridge of your choice. However, as alluded to above, changing the cartridge on a tonearm with a fixed headshell could prove a tricky task - a detachable headshell makes the process easier.

If you get a turntable that takes an SME-type headshell (fairly standard), you can even buy cartridges pre-mounted on a headshell - the only thing you need to do is align the cartridge in the mounting slots according to the particular turntable. Most turntables with S-shaped or J-shaped arms are of this type.

You can probably find a modern turntable with S-shaped arm and Walnut finish (e.g. Teac TN-4D), but there should be quite a few vintage models of this kind open to you if you keep an eye on the auction sites.
 
There was a time when changing cartridges on a fixed headshell arm was like child's play for me.
Nowadays I'm afraid time has caught up with me and detachable headshells are the only ones I can accept.
I'm my heart of hearts I know that it's a compromise as it affects the rigidity of the cartridge and arm interface but it's a compromise im willing to make if it allows me an easy way forward to change cartridges.
On the subject of availability, over here in the UK it seems not only is there a shortage of some brands and models, but the prices are increasing also.
Even some of the Chinese made tables are seemingly in short supply and prices rising.
What part is down to the pandemic or Brexit is uncertain!

It is certainly interesting that the Pandemic seems to have led to an even bigger renaissance of vinyl....
 
Both Micro Seiki and Victor (JVC) made tonearms with the SME style headshell that overcome the objections that supposedly a fixed headshell tonearm fixed.
The arms have a collet type of connector that fits a standard SME headshell but as you tighten it, it clamps down onto the bayonet fitting unlike most tonearms. So aside from a few gram weight penalty they are just as good as a fixed headshell type arm but much more convenient. And the weight doesn't really matter unless you are using very high compliance cartridges and they are about non-existant these days.
Why more manufactures didn't use this design baffles me. Probably cost a little bit more.

Like many things, chalk it up to the virus. Our furniture lines are out 4-5 months. Got a NAD C368 amp for the Mrs. Our local store pulled strings and got it in a week. Put me at the head of the list. Said I could sell it and make money. The Mrs’ system is rack mounted. Was using vintage amps and replacing every two years. It’s painful. Don’t mind changing stuff on my systems. Delays seem to be the new norm. Funny though I needed capacitors for several turntables. English company. Those caps were ordered on Mon, from England and arrived at my house Weds! Good luck. Too bad you’re not in southeast NY, I would hand you something to use.

I was in the same situation. I wanted to upgrade from my 1983 Technics turntable. I wanted something that looked attractive to satisfy my wife. She doesn't like the look of the older turntable and in order to put the TT on top of the stereo console so that I don't have to bend down and barely be able to place an LP between the dust cover and the platter, I wanted the Debut Evo. It satisfied my wife in terms of esthetics, and also is an upgrade for me.

But then they were sold out. I went to google. Audio Advice didn't have them in stock. Crutchfield same thing... out in April for availability. I went to eBay and found that Audio Advice had a flat black one, which is what I wanted, so I bought it there. It was the last one they had. But check out eBay and check the sellers.

I was also looking for a Porsche 911 996 two years ago and knew the price ranges. They've gone up 50% in value since the pandemic. I like to call it Damn Panic. :-)

I should have checked EBay. I went with a vintage tt for half the price. Sounds good, but I may never know how it compares to a new one.
