Citation II - Infinity RS-IIIA

I currently have a HK Citation II amp with most of the McShane updates. I have the opportunity to pickup a pair of Infinity RS-IIIA's for a fair price. They have recently been recapped and refoamed. Cabs are in great shape. The grills are poor at best but those I can deal with. My question is how far am I going to push the Citation if I use the Infinity's with it? The nominal impedance is listed as 4 to 8 ohms with a recommended power rating of 50-200 watts. At this point I am assuming I should be ok if I use the 4 ohm output on the Citation. Before I moves down this path I wanted to check in with folks that have more experience than I with both the Citation and the Infinity's. Thanks.

What's up? I'm a new owner of a pair of pristine conditions Infinity RS-IIIa that I acquired about 4 weeks ago from one of our own at Barter Town, at first I tried them with a solid state amp and preamp with lots of power but I personally did not like the sound, them I mate them with a Bob Latino St-120 tube power amp at 65 watts per channel and a Solid State Parasound P3 preamp and I'm in love with this set up. I'm running the amp in the 8 ohm tap with no problems and for my personal taste I set up the midrange at 9 o'clock and highs at 11. My 2 cents.

Use the 4 ohm tap and you should be fine. Let your ear guide you with clipping, and go easy on the volume knob. I use a 7355 system with ML electrostats and they are a much more difficult load. Tubes are very forgiving if you accept the power / volume realities you have.

I had a pair of RS 5b's at one point that were wonderful. I was originally powering them with a Pioneer Spec 2, but found the match to be rather harsh. The other side of the pendulum was a 3.5 watt SET amp I picked up here in BT. Despite the volume limitations, the sound was much, MUCH better... I was actually really impressed at the base response of the speakers to this little amp, and I highly recommend giving the Infinity RS + tubes a shot. At >50 wpc (I think), you'll be just fine...

Should be fine. Tube amps will handle low impedance better than an equivalent soiled state set up

Thanks for all of the replies. At least know I have some confidence that moving forward with the purchase is a workable idea. Will be picking these up today. Will be interesting to hear the difference between these and the Klipsch Chorus I's I am using now.

How do the Chorus sound with the Deuce? I have a Deuce disassembled right now waiting for me to get the time to rebuild and some Chorus IIs that need a recap and possible Ti treatment along with Howard's restore rub down.

The Chorus is a great match for the Deuce. Efficiency is the big thing here so it's real easy to push the volume up with no distortion from the Deuce. Perfect rock speakers if you like to crank it. Hooked the III's up as soon as I got them home. Had to push the gain up to get the same volume levels as the Chorus but they are a bit "brighter" and "cleaner" sounding on the high end. Thankfully that is adjustable on the speaker itself so the there is plenty of room to fiddle. I am most impressed with the bass from these speakers. 2 10" poly woofers in a sealed enclosure and again the clarity of the bass is better than the Chorus's. Frankly I am happy with the purchase and the III's will be my everyday speaker for awhile but I am glad to know I have the Chorus's ready for party night...
