CJ did me right!

Mystery solved. Recently ordered a pair of M8080 tubes from the CJ dealer in MA to replace the worn out pair in my CJ PV-15 pre-amp. The originals were Mullard, but I could not identify the replacement tubes until today. the tubes read: 000-4058
CV-4058
KQDD/K
80-45

Here's the skinny on those tubes, gleaned from the 'net:


6C4 tubes are available from Watford Valves of England as the Mullard CV4058 (military number) which is also known as a KQDD/K or M8080. These tubes are the best 6C4 variant that money can buy, and Conrad-Johnson uses them in their new PV-14L audiophile preamp. They told me they have never found a better 6C4 tube. They were made for British military mobile radios and can really take a thrashing, as well as a minimum 10,000 hour useful life.

I feel somewhat chastised for assuming CJ was ripping me off by not sending Mullard replacements.

CJ is a great company to work with not to mention their products are fantastic. I called and asked for schematics for my PV-1 preamp and CAV-50 integrated amp and before I got off the phone with the apps engineer I received an email with both schematics. Try that with most any other manufacture.

Yes same here. Sent two sets of schematics for PV-5 and Pre.5. Great customer service !
 
When you said "8080" I thought of one of these:

update--2 years down the road and need to replace the 8080's again. This time I chose a different route. Ordered a pair of NOS RCA tubes for $15 and a pair of Sylvania NOS for $30. The RCA's sound plenty good, not dull at all. Also got some new tung sol 6V6 tubes for my headphone amp. WOW!
 
Tube world sent me a pair of JHS-6C4 Sylvania black plate "O" getter NOS 1959 tubes, and yes they sound better than the m8080's sold by CJ.

Initially the gentleman said he would recommend only mullards. (yeah at $80 a pair, lol), until I pointed out to him that on his own webpage there is a listing for sylvanias that were used successfully in a CJ pv-15. So he sent them. glad he did.
